Clifford Sifton has always been looked upon as a man of independent mind and a leader amongst men. He occupied for many years the position of Min ister of the interior in the Laurier Government, but for private reasons retired from the Cabinet a few years ago. Clifford Sifton would declare himself against the trade agree- ment, yet Mr. Sifton refrained from giving out the least inkling Mr. Sifton spent a great deal of time in preparing his speech and these efforts only whetted the public appetite for what he had to say. Mr. Sifton has always been recognized by the members of both political parties as _a deep thinker on economic questions, and for the past ten days, his coming speech was looked for- ward to with the keenest interest by not only the members of the House but by the Cabinet, and in fact, by the whole country. ONTARIO Purple does not merely temporarily tuJat or inspire the Animal. It fattens and strengthens it, permanently. W. A. JENKINS MFG. It is not more food your Animals need. They must have something to help their, bodies get all the nourishment from the food they are getting. So that they will fatten, and stay fat, all the year 'round. "Stock Food" will not do this. Because "Stock Food" is nothing more or less than a mixture of the very things which you, yourself, grow on your own farm. Mil. Sifton's speech will have a widespread influence. The CO.H.C. literary society helds its regular meeting in the school house, which was crowd ed to the doors, after the He dealt With every class of industry and pointed out the disaster that reciprocity would bring to each and all of them. a Mr. Sifton's speech had 'a splendid effect' and in it he pointed out and laid special stress on the fact that Canada was prospering under its pre- sent conditions, that the people had been trained to prepare their goods and send them to Britain, a wide, liberal and free market, while the reciprocity agrdment now asked them to turn their at tention in another direction and ship their goods into the United States. 6 days, as there was an extra weight of milk. You never heard ot any other or "Stock Food," doing likewise Another of Mr. Sifton's state- ments was also an astonishing one. It shows that Mr. Sifton had found out twenty years ago what many of the Liberals are finding out today. His state-' ment was in the following words: Twenty years ago,. Mr Sifton continued, he had folloived the Liberal leaders in the c_am- paign for unrestricted reciproci- ty with the United States and. had endeavored to convince the electors that that policy was the right one for Canada. "I may say, Mr. Speaker," he added, "that before that campaign was over I had about succeeded in convincing myself that that policy was wrong." . , One of Mr. Sifton's opening remarks was a most astounding one, for in ithe intimated that he would break away from his party leader. His statement is as follows: "When I say that' my investigations have led me to the conclusion that I cannot fol- low the leader of the party with which I have been idtntified practically all my, lifetime, it will be apparent that to me, at least, this question is a very im- oneportant one indeed." _ of his intentions, so that his speech burst upon the House Of Commons like a thunder shower, paralizing the friends of recipfo Clty and filling its enemies with jtibilaticms. It is a work that lends itself to a socie- ty of this kind and they took full advantage of all the p;.~~ihilities and gave a delightful interpczta- tion of a very pretty composi- tion. The annual concert of the above society was held in the Institute Hall, Winona, on Mon- day evening, Feb. 27, and was a great success. pr The meeting was held at Newmar- ket and was a private one, but Toron- to papers published the fact that a resolution supporting Reciprocity met with a storm of objections from prom- ment liberals and it had to be with- drawn.
