The vote on the motion was vice versa. Grants Laid Over The matter of considering the grants to the Niagara Peninsula Fruit Growers' Association and the St. Catharines Horticultur- al Society was taken up and Councillore Mitchell and Allan moved to grant the fruit grow ers $100 and the Hort-icutural Society $350. Councillors Greene and Low- rey. moved in amendment .that the matter be laid over until the June session, while Councillors Secord and Craise moved an amendment to the amendment to the effect that no grant be made to the fruit growers and $150 to the Horticultural Socie- ty. The last amendment was lost, only the mover and second- er voting for it, while the first amendment was carried, Coun- cillors Allan and Mitchell vot- ine nav. i Discussed Reciprocity Amost the entire afternoon was spent in discusising the grant to defray the expenses of a deilega-. tion to Ottawa. Councillor Mitchell believed that though the sum was large it was fully warranted. The ma- jority of the fruit growers of the county believed that the pro posed change in the tariff would be injurious to the industry. While it could not be definately ascertained what injury would result, it was quite likely that it would. The duty was not taken off the manufacturers and yet the fruit industry was one of the best in the country. He would like to see a good big deputation go down to Ottawa. Councillor Greene could not see it that way. He could not see why, if the fruit growers had so much invested as they said, they should come asking for charity. He was a fruit grower on a small scale himself. He went in to make a living like the others and he did not come to the council asking for assis- tance.) He would not be afraid to compete with the American grOWVérs. .He could-not '(giiiipitiit the motion. V CouncillQr Hoshal presented a motion 'passed at a meeting of fruit growers at Beamsville asking that the entire county council go with the delegation Councillor Lymburner said that in his municipality fruit growing was coming to the front, but he wanted to know what would be gained by spending so Council Lowrey added that at a meeting of growers in his section on Wednesday it was decided to ask the County Council for $1,000 to defray the expenses of the delegation. Councillor Wilson believed" what was a benefit to one part of the county was a bene fit for the other. The growers would not get the benefit of the American market. He was a protectionist all the way through. Councillor Craise had a peti tion from growers in his town ship asking that the County Council assist them. He believ ed a large deputation should go to Ottwa, and endeavor to induce the Government to effect a change. Councillor Martin said the township council of Clinton has decided to go to Ottawa He thought that if it was going to injure the county, something should be done to help the fruit growers. 1 Councillor Hoshal said he felt like going carefully in touching the matter. He had always beet? a free trader, and when such a; thing came to hand he did not] feel very anxious toftoucht He did not believe' that Ifncil Sam was any smarter than Jo I ny Canuck and he believed tt ' subject should be conside 4;; with a broad view. 1,')a" Councillor Allan claimed a? dealer was responsible for tttiii)); high price of fruit. The An1iiliii; ican growers were able, to pttif duce their fruit cheaper 3.151%; place it on the Canadian market; earlier than the Canadian frui‘tg. The sutiproposed was not ttit), large. m Councillor Burritt said he' did not think the ratepayers of hiS township would sanction the: voting of that sum. He was iii,' favor of a delegation going doWIij if it paid its own expenses, arsi, though he did not think 't would; make more impression on the? Government which was 1eg,is1atii ing for the benefit of the Whole; country, not for any particular: section. :2}? The warden complimented thé; Ann council upon becoming such or; cellent debators. "j'),:' Must Return Money ',i'i,j-" . Th It was.moved by Councilloir" Hoshal, seconded by Councillor hm.“ Greene, that whereas Mr. C. li; on Sn, Fisher, the county registrar, hats tende been charging the amount of the Thr premium on his bond as disis lege,' bursements of his office in the vi , annual return made to the treas ces urer, we hereby absolutely refuse Ir" to pay the same and ask Mn choir. Fisher to return the amount so charged to the treasurer and the Th, clerk is hereby instructed to Feb., bill Mr.Fisher for the amount'. d . Carried. The S After spending the greats? portion of Thursday evening in discussing the assessments df the various townships in this county in committee of the whole, the County Council def? cided to‘let the present assess)) ment stand for another year. The committee decided that. unless) the assessment could be adopted for a period of five years, the cost of appointing valuators was too great to be considered and recommended the present assess ment to stand. The Educational Committee submitted a second report re- commending that Clause 2 of the previous report in regard to the money paid by Welland Coun ty to Lincoln countv for Inspec tor Ireland's services, be struck out. The report stated that it had been through' a misunder- standing that the clause had been inserted. 7 The main discussion centred upon the delegation to go to Ottawa and it was decided that every member of the council who could not go with the dele gation, should appoint a subsrl tute, and that His Honor, Jud( Carman, Sheriff Dawson, Coun? Clerk Clench, Crown Attorng+ Brennan, County Treasurer W mer, Superintendent Nelson " Councillor Mitchell though th/ti',",",',' if the council went down in It, body it would carry more'weigh),! with the Government.
