L,',.,.',.:, cfifiémg‘ga The amount of stealing that has been done in this part of the country in. the past ten years has been very great. Oats have disappeared from men's barns, potatoes nave been taken from the fields and cellars, fruits 0 fall kinds have walked away in the night, chickens by FELL ON SLIPPERY SIDE- WALK The result is that the chide thief goes on and on, thriving and fattening on his neighbor's hen roosts and in m'any cases escaping punishment altogether. The reason why chicken thieves escape punishment is on account of the fact that many farmers and fruit growers do not keep close track of their chickens-half a dozen or a dozen fowl can be stolen from a flock and the owner not miss them-and when he does miss them, he does not give it any serious consideration. In case that the chickens are missed the owner neglects to take any steps to catch the thieves, beyond speaking to his neighbor about the matter, or locking his hen house door. Hundreds of dollars worth of chickens have been stolen in this locality since last August and only one or two parties have been punished. One in the neighborhood of Stoney Creek and the other in the heighbor- hood of Grimsby. The great trouble with finh1g a man for stealing chickens is that a man is fined for one breach of the law while in most cases he has been guilty of many breaches of the law. When a man goes out delib. erately to rob his neighbor's hen roots in order that he may sell the chickens to make money instead of working and getting money honestly, I am afraid that a ssthall fine will not have a very deterrent effect. The new law, by which chick en thieves are allowed to get off by the payment of a fine, may discourage stealing, but I doubt it. t BY Frank F airborn t 'yoo'6s4'abHaosFHugatqiqaaFgssggai '9+' (. l will be given by the National Drug and Chemical Co of Canada, Limited to those who make the closest estimates of the population of Canada as deter. mined oy the official census in May 1911.
