INDEPENDENT LOCAL OPTION â€"FARED BADL The Local Option wave which has been passing over the Proâ€" vince of Ontario for the past few years, received quite a seâ€" vere shock on Monday, Jan. 2, IQII, which shows, that while many of the ‘townships may continue toâ€"vote for Local Opâ€" tion, the dry wave has about spent itself in / the towns and villages. In the vote on Monday, many places ‘defeated the Local Option byâ€"law with large majorities against 1P on a ‘straight vote, while other places defeated Loâ€" cal Option on account of the threeâ€"fifiths clause. A most remarkable thing was the heavy voting against Local Option in the County of Welâ€" land, every municipality in the County going against the byâ€"law except the Township of Thorold. The voting on Local Option in the County of Welland was a preâ€"arranged affair. The advoâ€" cates of the byâ€"law brought on the vote in every town, village ang township in the County simâ€" ulfaneously in the hope that the ultaneously in the hope that the fight in one place would stimuâ€" late the Local Option advocates to work harder in neighboring places. The word was given out that the Town of Welland woanld &5 heavy. for: Local Opâ€" out that the Town of W elland would go heavy for Local Opâ€" tion, and this was. expected. to have an influence on the smaller municipalities. The result must be very disappointing to the adâ€" vocates of Local Option. . Welland (town) defeated Loâ€" cal Option on a straight vote, by 44 majority. Thorold defeatâ€" ed it by z2 majority. Port Colâ€" borne defeated it by 66 majority. Bridgeburg defeated it by 90 ma fority. Fort Erie, defeated. it by IOI majority. Berti township, in which is situated the historiâ€" cal town of Ridgeway, and the pretty little village of Stevensâ€" ville, defeateg the byâ€"law by 57 majority. Humberstone defeatâ€" ed it by 41 maijority. Crowland township defeated it, Willoughby f l iE froughoutâ€" the â€" Province, there were several towns and villages carrieg Local Option, but in the fight generally, Local Option got the worst of it The big towns of Barrie, Napanee and Huntsville defeated Local Option, while the City of Guelph literally snowed it under. In Toronto township, the Loâ€" cal Option people put up a very stif figlit, Mr. Ben.H. Spence, the secretary of the Dominion Alliance going into the Townâ€" ship ang speaking twice; once at Clarkson and once at Port Creâ€" dit, but in spite of this fact, the township went strong against Local Option. The results throughout the Province are as follows: Carried Local Option byâ€"laws were carrieq in the following municiâ€" palities.â€" JAS. A. LIVINGSTON, Editor. )as.
