L â€" believe there are communities so situated that Iocal option will do #ood, but in & comâ€" munity in such close touch with two large cities, where beer is manufactured and where liquor is sold, I doubt if: any permanent good will result from the local option byâ€"law. 4 0 0 O I It is not to be expected that Mr Goodâ€" i win shoald know oneâ€"tenth or even one-\ Wundreth part of what is going on in ' Grimsby, but that don‘t prevent it going on just the same, and while I respect Mr. | Goodwin‘s views on the matter, I cannot wipe from my mind the positive knowledge thuat I bave of the matter. If Mr Goodwin would take the trouble to make himself acquainted with the facts of the case, he could write quite a different letter to the one he wrote last week. Deal with the men, deal with the boys and work constantly to get the young people into the temporanee societies, work constantly to pledée them against the use of liquor whether is be over the bar or out of the bottle. ; P«:«sing a byâ€"law will never save men and that is where temperance people have fallen down in logal option towns. They have pasaed the byâ€"law, closed the bars and then let the devilish work go on just as freely as ever, and rnow they are actually trying to prove that the devilish work is not going on. Not only this but the temperancepeople â€" have practically abandoned the real temperance work in local option towns. Every young man rnd every young women in Grimsby ‘should <be pledged against the use of intoxicating liquors and I doubt if there are a dozen pledged. I have no doubt that the temperance, people will fly at my head because I tell . them the plain, truth, but the surgeon must amputate the limb that is mutilated or poisonous, in order to save the body and the temperance cause in Grimsby is passing through a most dangerous stage at the present moment on account of the fact that its main limb, local option, is _poisonous and unless temperance people ‘ bestir themseives and opsn their eyes to the present danger, the poison will permeate ‘through the whole system and the latter ‘,stage wiil be worse than the former,. So infatuated have temperance men become with local option in Grimsby that some of them have actually stood and seen sevsn keg of loger and several cases of liquor unloaded off one ear and stoed right there and make light of it and said that it didn‘t amount to much"â€"Do these men think that making light of the matter or even denying it can alter the facts. If the temperance people wané local option to be a permanent success they imust try and cultivate & temperance sentiment they must try and inculeate the idea that wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. I have spoken to the boys and said to them that they bave no more need of lugging a whiskey bottle aromnd under [/A C y ! ho and said to ldcal option than under 110 as they rarely ever did it law, they are utterly fool do it under loceal option. There is nothing manly or clever about a mam carrying intoxicating drinks on his person, and there is nothing more dangerous to his future welfare and I urge and will continue to urge that boys and men refrain from this babit absolutely. I blame the temperance people however, for not giving this phase of the question enough attention, and I also blame ‘them for trying to minimize the evil, trying to hide the fact rather than prevent it or avert itâ€"â€"no general ever won & victory unless he was thoroughly informed of the strength of his enemy, and no temperance man will ever accomplish much good unless he realizes to the full, the strength of the opposing forces (and these in this case are kegs otf beer and bottles of whiskey) and take such action as will eventually result in a lessening uf the evil. Supposing a man was strong enough and big enough to reach out his bhand on any day, and grasp every bottle and every keg that was making its way to Grimsby and cast them into the ocean, would that cure the evil, Isay "No" what the man has got to do is reach the individual, bring pressure ur influence to bear on the man, en each man, in order that he may cease to have a desire to bring liquor into the community. § Q â€" 0 © 0 If I see a friend of mine that is making a fool of bhimself with liquor, I take him one side and plainly tell him thit he is pursuing a wrong course, He does not always take my advice but I dare venture to say that when the big book is opened that there will be founrd nmany cases where men did not refrain altogether, they refrained to a certain extent. If fifty temperance men and women in Grimsby would do this consistently and persistently for one year, what a mighty change would be brought about. . Hiding or seeking to cover the real facts of the case and allowing the serpent to still conâ€" tinue to coil itself about men and boys, and spread its poison by means of bottles and kegs, is only in my epinion, building a fool‘s paradise which will be shat tered and fall to the ground just as sure as the ‘ sun rises and sets, Winter Caps Clothing Shirts Sox y license P Y P03 aps, $7,25, 10.00 se law and ider license and silly to >Â¥ C 0 0O O J 5.25, 6.50 s $5 00 , 20¢, 25¢ in a box t © o @ OA 0 a o aA A_ a A_ Canada. â€" Students may pay you.
