USING LESS SPRAY WITH PROPER NoZzuEs ried out by the Division of Field Husbandry, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, in both Eastern and Western Canada on the appliâ€" eation of the chemical 2.4â€"D for the control of weeds in grain crops, it has been determined that satisâ€" factory results can be m‘ 'l&h.tlnflnnbh.deu-‘ mm;.r'.mm‘ applied with a turbine type of sprayer, in place of 60 to 80 galâ€" udmmmm acre applied with the standard boom sprayer. These findings suggested the posâ€" sibility of adapting standard sprayâ€" ‘hc_mtounlm.mn gallonage of more eeu.tnud‘ spray per acre. Consequently, the collection of spray nozzles for teat purposes was begun in August, During the winter of 1946â€"47, 10 different types and sizes of nozzles were tried to determine such characteristics as uniformity, area covered, and output of liquid over a range of 25 to 65 pounds presure. Certain refinements were made on the test pump unit and pensive outfit for field tests on the three most promising nozzles. Spraying in the road tests indiâ€" cated that pressures of 40 to 50 pounds were best for the nozzles selected, and in the field operaâ€" tions it was found that speeds up to eight and 10 miles an hour are practical on reasonably level fields. A feld spray chart applicable to any width of boom with the nozâ€" zles shown spaced at 12 inches has been prepared. Further information may be obâ€" tained from the Division of Field Husbandry, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, including details on the home construction of a low pressure sprayer. Information on rates of applying 2,4â€"D is contained in a leaflet issued by the Division entitled, Simplifying 24â€"D, which may be obtained on request.
