Donald James McKinnon, at one time a resident of Grimsby, widely known in educational and manufacturing circles, died on Friday, Dec. 12, 1924, at his home, 141 Farnham Avenue, Toronto, in his 77th year. Born in St. Thomas, the son of a Presbyterian minister, Mr. McKinnon commenced teaching school in Owen Sound at the age of 16, and when only 23 was appointed Public School Inspector in Peel County.
For some 17 years he remained in Peel County, and then accepted the post of Superintendent of the Victoria Industrial School at Mimico. Within four years he resigned to become Vice-President of the McKinnon Industries in St. Catharines. Some 30 years ago Mr. McKinnon came to North Grimsby and owned Bonnie Brae fruit farm, three-quarters of a mile east of Grimsby, and was a member of Union lodge A.F. & A.M.
An ardent Liberal, and an intimate friend of the late Sir George Ross, he contested Lincoln in the Liberal interests in the Provincial elections of 1902, but was defeated by Dr. Jessop.
Moving to Toronto shortly after the elections, Mr. McKinnon became associated with the Pease Foundry Company, of which he was President for some years. In Toronto he was an active member of Bloor Street Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the Toronto Chess Club, and one of the oldest players in the city.
Besides his widow, Mr. McKinnon is survived by six sons: John G., Toronto; W.A., St. Catharines; Ronald F., Toronto; Ross B., Oshawa; D.A., Ottawa, and Kenneth N., Toronto.
