Full Text

After a lingering illness, extending over a period of several months, Andrew E. Durfey, a widely known and highly esteemed resident of Winona, died rather unexpectedly at his home late last Wednesday afternoon.

Mr. Durfey's sickness overtook him in the late summer, but a few weeks ago he showed signs of recovery. On Sunday last, however, there set in a relapse from which he failed to rally.

A man of sterling worth and exemplary character, the deceased was held in the highest respect by all who knew him and his untimely death will be mourned by the entire district. He was in his 49th year and had been a resident of Winona since boyhood.

The late Mr. Durfey was a member and trustee of the Fifty Methodist Church, as well as a member of its quarterly-official and parsonage boards.

For the past 18 years he was a valued employee of E.D.Smith & Sons, Limited, as one of its assistant managers, and was most popular among his fellow employees, as well as with the firm.

Mr. Durfey filled the office of school trustee and secretary of the board for school section No. 1, Saltfleet, for several years, and was closely allied with any movement for the betterment of the community. He took a keen interest also in amateur sports. He was a member of Union Lodge, No. 7, A.F. and A.M., of Grimsby, as well as an officer of G.R.C. No. 69, Royal Arch Masons, Grimsby, and a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters. In politics Mr. Durfey was a life-long Conservative and took an active interest in all that pertained to the welfare of the party.

Left to mourn are his widow, and one daughter, Miss Eletha, at home; one brother, Arthur Durfey, Hamilton; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kelson, Winona.
