John Harvey Broderick, one of the premier fruit growers of the Niagara District, died Monday morning at his home in Louth, at the advanced age of 77 years.
The deceased was born in Louth, the son of the late David Broderick, of Yorkshire, England, and had followed his profession as farmer throughout his life. He was one of the best known fruit growers in the district, taking a deep interest in fruit culture and identifying himself with those movements which tended to raise the scope of the work. In his early life he was interested in horses, being a prominent horseman. He was for many years director and for some time President of the St. Catharines Cold Storage and Forwarding Company.
The late J.H. Broderick took a deep interest in the proposed beautification of the provincial highways, bringing forward a scheme for the planting of fruit and nut trees along the highways. He was also vitally interested in endeavoring to impress upon the fruit growers the need of growing those varieties of fruits suitable for canning purposes, and in this connection was the prime mover in an organized effort to educated the fruit growers as to the needs of the canners. He was a past president of the Niagara Peninsula Fruit Growers' Association.
Throughout his long and useful career, the late Mr. Broderick was always a worker for the improvement of the farming and fruit growing industry and in that regard he became well and favorably known throughout the community. He was a man of high ideals and strong convictions and fearless in presenting his views to his fellow men. His sudden demise will be learned with sincere regret by his wide circle of friends.
He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Prof. F.W.Broderick, of the Manitoba Agricultural College, Winnipeg; A.B. Broderick, of Louth, and Mrs. J.M. Casselman, of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment in the Louth Methodist Cemetery.
