Fitzgerald, Vincent John Edward (Died)

A former well-known resident of Grimsby passed away in Galt hospital on Wednesday evening last, in the person of Vincent John Edward Fitzgerald, at the age of 31 years. "Paddy", as the young man was popularly known in this district, came from Limerick, Ireland, where he was born, to Grimsby about 12 years ago and worked on various fruit farms. In August 1914, he joined the first bunch of 2nd Dragoons that left this district for overseas, but was turned back from Valcartier Camp as medically unfit. He later joined another unit and was stationed for some time in the Maritime Provinces, later joining the Mounted Rifles in Hamilton with which outfit he went overseas. While in camp at Shorncliffe, he was stricken down with pneumonia and neuritis, and upon recovery, was invalided home to Canada.

For the past two years he has been a patient at the Brant hospital, but left that institution this spring and returned to his home in Guelph. On Wednesday afternoon last he attended a ball game in Galt and shortly after the game was stricken with a hemorrhage and was rushed to Galt hospital where he passed away a few hours later in spite of all that medical aid could do.

He was interred in the soldiers' plot in the Guelph cemetery, on Saturday morning.

Deceased leaves a widow and one boy, three years old to mourn his loss.
