Gibbs, Norman (Died)
- Full Text
In the obituary of the late Norman Gibbs, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. L.R. Gibbs, "Fairhaven", North Grimsby, in our last week's issue, it was erroneously stated that he was working with Mr. A.R. Globe in the Northland - and at the request of Mr. Gibbs we are publishing herewith a correction, and further facts surrounding his untimely end.
The very sudden death of Norman L. Gibbs came as a great shock to all. In August Norman took a post with the Pine Lake Limber Co., Pickerel, Northern Ontario. When the winter camps were formed he was placed in charge of the stores of No. 3 camp. The manager of the company, writing under the date of November 30th from Pickerel, says: "Norman had been doing a great deal of hunting lately and had on Thursday been out hunting and being near another of our camps had gone over there for dinner. He had to cross a swamp to get there and in doing so wet his feet. Returning to his own camp with the men who had been stringing the telephone wire, he complained of being ill, and Mr. Grier, who had charge of the camp, sent him out to the base, seeing the ice was forming on the lake and thinking it was wiser not to have him in the camp in case he might be seriously ill. The doctor, after examining Norman, decided to take him to Parry Sound, as being the nearest point where he could get the best attention. The day after reaching hospital he was much worse and an operation revealed intestinal trouble of long standing. He received every attention at the Parry Sound hospital under Dr. Stone, B.A., M.B., assisted by three other doctors."
