Another drowning accident happened at the lake shore, Grimsby, on Saturday afternoon last when Wilfred John Hildreth was drowned while swimming off the east pier. Hildreth with several other young men had been swimming off the second crib from the end of the pier, when the other boys suddenly missed him. They thought he had come ashore and they swam in but could find no trace of him. Archie Bierd went back to the pier, and, looking down into the water, which was quite clear at that point, saw the body lying on the sand bottom of the lake. Bierd dived for the body and brought it to the surface. The boys carried him to the shore and being all Scouts immediately went to work to try to revive life. Despite their best efforts, they could not rally the slightest spark of life. Dr. Buck and Coroner Dr. Alexander were hurriedly summoned as was Chief Konkle. They were on the scene a few minutes after the body was recovered but despite their efforts, nothing could be done... Bill, as he was popularly known, was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hildreth, Main Street West, and was in his 20th year. He was a drummer in the Boy Scouts Bugle Band, and had only returned from Niagara Camp where he had been a drummer in the 98th Bugle Band. The funeral which was very largely attended took place on Monday afternoon from the home of his parents to that most beautiful God's acre, St. Andrew's Cemetery. Services were conducted at the church and graveside by Rev. J. Allan Ballard...
