Grimsby harbor claimed another young lad on Tuesday afternoon when little Samuel Beere, 8 years old, youngest son of Mrs. Albert Beere, was drowned while attempting to swim from one pier to another. The young lad with Teddy Crabbe left the west pier to swim over to the east pier about 5:30. When half way across, Beere threw up his hands and yelled. Crabbe grabbed him but had to break loose as he pulled him under. Crabbe came to the pier and got his breath and went back for Beere again and was again pulled under. A third time he grabbed the young lad but again had to break loose. He then came to the pier and with some other lads went out in the punt for Beere but just as they got to him he sank from sight and never came up again. There were no fishermen at the lake at that time. Telephone calls up town soon brought a crowd to the spot and dragging operations were commenced. The body was recovered by Capt. James Doyle shortly after 7 o'clock, within a few feet of the spot where it went down. Chief Konkle and Coroner Alexander took charge of the body and after examination the Coroner decided that an inquest was unnecessary. The body was brought to the undertaking parlors of M.D.E. Kitching and prepared for burial. The funeral will take place from the home of his mother on Friday afternoon.
