Wylie, Harry H. (Died)
- Full Text
The citizens of this district were greatly shocked on Monday morning to learn of the death in Cleveland of Mr. H.H. Wylie, former owner of Grimsby Beach and owner of the Bookjohn suburban property west of the Beach. The late Harry H. Wylie was an American by birth and was widely known as a real estate operator and amusement park owner. Before coming to Canada, he opened and managed Beachland and Lake Shore Boulevary, two large amusement parks in Cleveland. The deceased came to Canada in March of 1910, and purchased the old Grimsby Park property which he renovated and overhauled and gave to the people of this district and in fact of Canada, a real summer resort and amusement park. During the seasons of 1910, 1911 and 1912, he conducted the Beach very successfully. In the winter of 1912 he formed a company and sold out the Beach to them, taking it back on account of failure of the members of the company to live up to their agreement. In 1914 he sold the property to the Canada Steamship Lines who now hold it...After selling the Beach, Mr. Wylie purchased a large tract of land on the lake front from Mr. Jonathan Book and this he opened up for suburban homes and small fruit farms. The early demise of Harry H. Wylie, he was only 46, will be a great blow to Grimsby district, as he had great faith in this part of the country, and had intended in making his home here permanently...He leaves to mourn his loss a widow and four children, Miss Helen, Beatrice, William and Robert. The body will be brought to Grimsby for interment on the 5:55 G.T.R. train tonight and the funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) to Queen's Lawn Cemetery...
