Mr. and Mrs. Age Salvirda of 30 Elm St., Grimsby will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Thursday May 20 with an open house. The open house will take place at the Christian Reformed Church on Regional Road 81 from 2 until 5 p.m. Mr. Slavirda married Mettja (Bierema) in Franeker, Holland on May 20, 1926. He remembers that 50 years ago there was no such thing as a honeymoon, so the day after the wedding he was busy cutting down weeds and grass with a sickle he still has today. The Salvirdas came to Copetown, Ontario in April, 1952. They later moved to a farm in Freelton, where Mr. Salvirda farmed for 10 years. In 1965 the couple retired in Grimsby. They have two children, daughter Hafke Zeymaker of Ancaster and Pier (Peter) of Hamilton. According to Mr. Salvirda, the couple has been lucky, and have had 50 happy and troublefree years.
