- Full Text
Jonathan Carpenter, one of North Grimsby's oldest and most highly respected citizens, passed away at his home near Winona on Monday morning, July 21, after a few hours' illness, as the result of a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Carpenter was an active, healthy man almost up to the hour of his death, having been in Grimsby on business Saturday afternoon and was in his usual health up to the moment that he was seized by paralysis. He was stricken down about 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon, July 19 and remained in an uncounscious condition until Monday morning, when he passed peacefully away. With the removal of Jonathan Carpenter, North Grimsby loses one of its very best business men and farmers and one who was known far and wide for many years as a stock breeder of high class horses and cattle. The deceased gentleman was born in the Township of Saltfleet on March 17, 1832, and was in his 82nd year at the timne of his death. He was a son of the late Alexander and Ann Carpenter and was baptized by the Rev. Geo. R.F. Grout, rector of St. Andrew's church Grimsby, on September 1, 1832. His sponsors were Jeremiah and Mary Carpenter. He was married over 50 years ago to Pricilla, daughter of the late Amos Chambers, who survives him. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter moved to the County of Norfolk, near Simcoe and engaged in farming for a few years, after which they returned to North Grimsby and settled on a farm on the stone road, three miles west of Grimsby, where they lived many years, moving next to their present home on the McGill farm near the lake shore...Ingledale Stock Farm... He is survived by his widow and two sons, Victor R. and Gordon R., both at home and by two brothers, W. Hugo of Vinemount and Andrew F. of Thippen, Sask. The funeral is taking place this afternoon, from his late residence, Ingledale farm, to St. Andrew's church cemetery, Grimsby.
