The saddest duty we have been called upon to perform in a long time is to chronicle the death this week of one of Grimsby's most popular and well known young matrons, in the person of Mrs. Fred M. Marsh of the firm of D. Marsh and Sons which took place at her residence, Clark and Ontario Streets, on the afternoon of Thursday, July 17, 1919 after a long and painful illness. The late Mrs. Marsh was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Barnett of Strabane, Ont. and was born in that village where she saw her girlhood and received her education, marrying Mr. Fred M. Marsh, the youngest son of Mr. Daniel Marsh, Grimsby, some 12 years ago and moving to Grimsby with her husband. ... The late Mrs. Marsh had always been in good health but some months ago was stricken with a very malignant disease which even her indomitable will and cool courage could not shake off and she was compelled to go to the Hamilton hospital and undergo one or more operations in the hope that her health and strength would be returned to her. The operations and great pain that she suffered undermined her vitality to such an extent that after first being confined to her room, she never again arose or was able to get about; and the end came on Thursday afternoon of last week after an indeed lengthy and courageous fight on the part of Mrs. Marsh. ...Left to mourn the loss of the late Mrs. Marsh, is her husband who is heart broken in his bereavement; a sorrowing mother and a married sister in Fort William, a sister at home and a brother in Burlington ... The funeral of the deceased lady took place on Sunday afternoon, July 20, 1919, and was largely attended by townspeople to pay their last respects to a dear and departed friend of all, in spite of the unpleasant nature of the day. Service was conducted at the house and graveside by the Rev. Thomas Ratcliffe, in the place of Mrs. Marsh's own minister, the Rev. J.A. McLachlan, who is ill; and interment took place in Queen's Lawn Cemetery. The pallbearers were all friends of long standing of Mr. and Mrs. Marsh.
