Pte. Ralph "Bud" Byford, 19, only son of Mr. and Mrs. William Byford, Adelaide Street, was killed in action on Sept. 16, official notification being received by his parents on Saturday. He enlisted at Hamilton in March 1943, before he was 18 years old. After training in Canada with anti-aircraft battery, he went overseas the latter part of June this year being transferred to the infantry before going to France. Born at St. Catharines, he spent his boyhood at Smithville, later moving to St. Thomas and coming to Grimsby four years ago. Prior to enlistment he attended Grimsby High School. Two uncles and an aunt - Cadet Ronald Byford, Sergt.-Major Beverley Byford, and Lieut. Gladys Barnim, United States Army Nurse are serving overseas. Another uncle, Sergt.-Major Jack Lawson, is in the army in Canada. Besides his parents, he leaves two sisters, Bernice and Joyce. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Barnim, Grimsby, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Byford, St. Catharines are grandparents.
