Many times have we been asked for copies of tbe Orangeville paper containing the list of lands in Dafferin to be sold, and only yesterday a resident of Proton sent to this office for a copy of the Owen Sound paper coutaining the list for Grey. Such advertisements should appear in more than one paper in the county, so that all interested could see them. â€" Shelburne Economist. Presentation. â€" On Tuesday evening Mr. Frank McCarroU, C. P. Mr. J. C, Brown made tbe presentation, and among those present were Messrs. Adamson, Davis- on, and P. Smith. ' ' « A Victim of Laudanum. THE UELAMCHOLT tATB OF A PBOHISINa TOUNO PHYSICUN. (From a Special Correepondence.) Shelbubne, Sept. 22. â€" Dr. D. B. Johnston of Homing's Mills died on Saturday, uiglit fiom an overdose cf laudanum. He was in Shelburne during the afternoon and was under tbe influence of liquor. He started for home at 6 o'clock, but be did not reach Homing's Mills until 6,30. Tbe distance is onlysix^miles. It was feared tbis evgning tbat be took tbe wrong road on arriTing at tbe cemetery. He was seen on tbeToionto and Sydenham road, and inquired tbe^ay to Horuiug's Mille. This will account for the length of time it took biin to reach home. Mr. Fbceniz, bis nncle.with whom be boarded, heard bim drlye into the stable^ and after waiting a few minutes went oat to see what detained the doctor and found bim lying in- sensible on tbe stable floor. He was remoy- ed to the bouse, and bis friends worked with bim for some minntes to endeavor to arouse him from what seemed to be a state of ex- treme intoxication. Failing in their efforts, they sent for Dr. Beid, who also practices at Horning's Mills, but everj effort was fruit- less. Soon tbe suspicion crossed the mind of tbe attending physician and the friends tbat the patient was under tbe inflnence of a deadly narcotic, so a search was instituted. Ou examining bis p^xskets an empty whiskey bottle, an eight ounce one, was found, also an eight ounce bottle of laudanum, of wbicn upwards of three ounces had been taken. \Vith this evidence before them, energetic treatment was pursued by tbe attendants to rid tbe stomach of its contents, but notwith- standing all that was done poor Johnston breathed bis last about 11.30. It is suppos ed that be took a drink out of the laudanum bottle in mistake. When near bis oflice be was met by a neighbor, who saw him urging his boise at full speed, in order, it is suppos- ed to reach his surgcy quickly to get some- thing to counteract the poison taken. Dr. David Raphael Johnston was a gradu- ate and medallist of Toronto University and of the Toronto School of Medicine. After bis graduation be practiced in partnership with Dr. Bicbardson of Ancaster for perhaps a year and a half. Three years ago this month be was admitted into ^partnership with Drs. £arr and Norton, who then bad offices at both Horning's Mills aud Bbelburne. He remained with them some fourteen months when he bought out tbe Homing's Mills business of the firm, and witb it tbe resi- dence of Or, Barr. Tbe deceased was nearly 30 years of age- and was considered one of the cleverest professional men in the Province. A brilliant scholar, a gentleman in. every respect, kind and generous to a fault he was universally esteemed wberererhewasknown His only failing was fondness of liquor. He knew bis weakness, and in many ways tried to curb tbe depraved appetite for ardent stim- nlants, witb but little success. The funeral was held to-diiy. A large concoarse ot friends and acquaintances ac- companied tbe procession to tue Shelburne Cemetery. Bev. T. J. McClelland of Knox Cburcb read the seivices at tbe grave Tbe whole community in shocked at the tragic end of a hfe that promised so brightly. His parents reside in Amaranth, a few miles from Shelburne. Courteous Home Manners. Very few young ieople realize the immeDse charm of gentle, eourtcoas home xnanncrB, It is not only that it is right and the duty of every gentle- wouian and gentlemau, but it is in- finitely lovely and attractive to see girls and boys showing in their own homes, to their own people and in their everyday life the same courtesy and the same consideration that Ihey exercise in Eociety. There is a species of vulgarity about •'company manners/' just as there ia in all veneer and there are many youn^ people who consider themeelyeB well bred, who woul^j^rn to wear sham jewellery, and who would think false pretense of any kind bad form, yet who keep Iheir gracionsness for the world, aud spoil the home atmos- phere by tbeir touchiness and rude- ness.
