Seldom have we seen a more eloquent, tender and resistless plea put forward in behalf o a patient but debt-cursed occu' pant of an editorial chair than the following from The Office: "Lives of poor men oft remind us honest toil don't stand a chance. More we work we leave behind us bigger patches on our pants. On our pants, once new and glossy, now are patches of different hue all because subscribers linger, and won't pay up what is due. Then let us all be up and doing send in your mite be it so small or when the snows of winter strike us we shall have no pants at all." Standabd Rules â€" ^In reference to inserting local reading notices announc- ing garden parties, con^rts, picmcks, tea-meetings, sodals and such like, people are frequently surprised when we inform them that we charge for such advertising. For the information of such people we give the following rules, which we believe are very reasonable for a local reading notice of any gathering by any church, society, person or persons, where there is to be a fee of admission, or collection taken up, our charge is fifty cents. When we print bills or dodgers for such to the amount of 11.60, then the reading 'notice goes free. If you go to the grocer for a dozen of lemons or a pound of tea for an enter- tainment yon expect to pay for them, then why should the printer be expected to contribute fifty cents to a dollar a week in advertising all the year Our advertising space is just as much our bread and butter as are the goods of a grocer.
