The law presumes that every man knows the law. This being a fact is it not a pitiable sii-^ht to Ste four of our Trustees stand up be- fore the ratepayers of this S. S. and, like a class of over-grown shiftless school boys witli hands thrust deep iu thesir pockets as if feelins: for an auswer to the questions being put to them but being unsucceselul in their search at last iu dire desperation blurt oat we d-d- d- do don ""t know. The facts regarding the history of this school site question are all quite green m the minds of the ratepayers, but to thow the fallacy of the position of the four rebellious truRtees who are clearly causing all the trouble and delay it will be necessary for us to briefly al lude to them. Mr. Brown, as clerk ot the school board, called the first prim- ary meeting of the ratepayers of the section foi- the purpose, as Mr. Lyons and Mr. Brown stated in the meeting, of ascertaining the wishes of the peo- ple regarding the location and building of a school house. Surely there was nothing wrong or uothiug illegal in calling such a meeting of the ratepay- ers, on the contrary it was right and just to do 60. At this meeting Trus- taee Lyons and Brown stated that the Trustees wished to be relieved of all ic3j)onsibi]ity regarding the location of the school site.. After a full dip- cuEsion, in which Trustee Irwin fully acqniesed in the position the other trustees had taken and after the trus- tees had asked to be relieved of all responsibility as to location, it was resolved by a unanimous vote of the meeting, that the tritstees be instruct- ed to examine the various echool sites, see what they could be purchased for, after which they were to call a meet- ing of the ratepayers, at which meet- ing they were todibcu.ss the desirabili- ty of the various sites so reported by the trustees and decide which they would ask them to take. The trustees [Who were at the meeting, and we think they were all there, heartily Bijreed to this proposition. And «8 Trustee Henry Irwin happily express- ed it, 'In as much as the school house was to bo built by the people and for the people why not let them say where and how it should be built." Every- body there echoed Lis sentiments by a hearty here, here I In pursuance with this understanding the trustees obtained tenders, called another meet- mg of the ratepayers, at which they reported the sites tendered for. This meeting was laige and representative, ihe merits of the respective sites were fully disoaesed. It was finally decided to submit the question of location to the people to decide by ballot, to this the trustees fully assented and seemed quite well pleased at being so easily relieved from any responsibility in the location further than to aid the rate- payers by casting their votes for the iccatiou which best suited thorn indi- vmnally. Mr. Brown, as clerk, gave proper notice of the poUing day, had the ballots prmted and everythini? put m readiness. The yote was finuUy polled and resulted io selecting a por- tion of the old fair ground as the site to be cboseu by the trustees.
