r i I: I- â- O. W. Rutledge, Proprietor. MARKDALE. NOV. 29, 1888. as good work. Acrnsade of tbe cbat-tfi acter proposed ought to have at le»B«| t the moral support, if not the active co-operation, of the people of every civilized and Christian cation. The nineteenth century surely ought not to be allowed to go out »»ith the dark stain of human slayery still upon the face of tbe eiarth. P.AILROAD EXTENSION. The agitation for a rail-yay from Durham via. Harkdale to Meaford has been very quiet for some time, and as far as the general public were con- â- cerned, almost forgotten, yet, a scheme has been undergoing practical consid- •eration by leading capitalists of tbe three points named above, who have organized themselves into a provision- til directorate and will apply to the Dominion Parliament at its next ses- eion tor an Act to incorporate a com- pany for tbe purpose of constructing equipping and operating said railway. The distance from Durham to Mark- dale is seventeen miles, and from -Markdale to Meaford twenty-fiveâ€" lorty-two m all, â€" and as no serious «ngmeering difficulties are m the way -of couetrncting such an extension the project appears quite feasible. The benefit to be derived from a connec- tion with two gigantic competing Imes, such as the Grand Trunk and •C- P. E., cannot be over-estimated. The names of tbe provisional directors • ars, for Markdaleâ€" W. J: McFarland, Eeeve Wm. Brown, Wm. Lucas and ri. Hill, councillors, and George M. Haskett. For Meafordâ€" Jas. Cleland, Mayor; E. Agnew, reeve G. P. Mc- intosh, deputy-reeve; E. Y. Godfrey; H. T. Law P. Fuller, Manager Mol- Bon's Bank Jas. Gardiner Charles Tarrar S. Wilson and James Trout. "We have not yet learned the names of ike Durham and Mt. Forest directors. From the financial standing and business capabilities of the ^boye -gentlemen we may look for- practical results, and hope in the near future to be able to report the success of the laudable project. Tlesuerton. Standard Cornspondence. For the unbecoming conduct of dealing a heavy blow with the closed right hand upon the cheek of David White, Esq., Mr. Edward Boss was summoned to appear before Mr. Arm- strong, J.P., to answer to the charge of assault on Thursday last. $1 aad cost setted the trouble. A Mr Mocte, of the Quaker per- suasion, preached and held the re- ligious services in the Town Hall here on Sabbath last. At a congregational meeting in the Presbyterian church here on Thursday last for the solution of Pastor from tbe ministers who have occupied the pulpit for the past three months, the Eev. W. G. MiUs, B. A., of Sunder- land, was the unanimous choice. In consequf'nce a congregational meeting and religious service will be held here, the Eev. D. McLeod, intenm moder- ator, to preach, on Dec. 4th, at 2 p.m, when a call will be moderated in to the Eev. W. G. Mills. The Advance said last week that there were no religious services held in any of the churches here on Thanks- giving day. We think he did not have his Sunday clothes on that day. The Rbv. W. Granti of Toronto, preached in the Baptist chapel in the afternoon a very appropriate and edi- fying sermon from the words of tbe Psalmest, "The Lord is my shepherd." H. Down, Esq., has retired from agricultural pursuits and is going to try his luck across the lines locating lor the present m the city of Detroit whence he moves this week. Absolutely Pure. This powder never varies. A marvel for purity, strength and wholesomeness. More economical than the ordinary kinds, and cannot be sold in competition with the mul- titude of low East, short weight alum or phosphate powders sold only in cans. Traverston Debating and Literary Club still continues to flourish and forms a means of instruction and amusement. Several powerful ques- tions have been grappled and settled showing that there are some powerful debaters in this neighborhood. The subject for Friday night is 'Eesolved that married life is happier than single hfe." It is needless to state that all the married men are on the affirmative. We could tell a story if we wished about the fox that lost his tail. Many of the school board in this neighborhood are changing their teachers for the next year and in every instance engaging teachers at a lower salary. This may be all very well bat is a teacher hired for a small salary always a cheap one We think not. and it is about time trustees were awakening to this fact. There are men in every community who would imperil the development of their child- ren's mind for the sake of a few centq m their school taxes. And, so long as such men are allowed to exert their influence so long will our schools be imperfect. Changing a ieacher every year for the sake of a few dollarsâ€" which are wasted in the end â€" is what keeps our schools back, is wliat hind- ers the edncational^rowth of our people, and hinder^^flie advancement of the nation ,y^^ the educational system of this country is to be strength- ened and advanced we must eoiploy good teachers and in order to get good teachers we mast pay them a good salary and not a miserable pittance that they, could excelii digging ditches. We know ime school not many miles from here, wh^re the trustees have seemingly teaigne^iilt power to a peraon not amemfaer of-itije 'bdard, and. he has engaged a teaober at 'an aluioBt nneara of salaty ud Js plab ^maim ' '-- disiMikted Pe^i it jdstrseijaj^ jko Emblems of your trade.
