While we have no particular atti- tude in prayer fixed by direct cotnm- and, yet it must be apparent to all people Jof deyout LabitB ot thought, that kneeling is the most expressive and appropritite attitude to be assum- ed by the creature in his attempted approaches to the Creator. This position is in keeping with the spirit of supplication, and ex- presses both our sense of humility and of dependence upon God, better than any other. We do not object to others standing up to pray where it is the custom of the church to which they belong to do so but we are Methodist, and it has been the rule as well as the custom of our people from the be- ginning, to kneel in prayer. Even those whose custom it is to stand up and pray, have the habit of kneeling in family prayer, and we think this is the besG position for prayer in the great congregation. For some time we have noticed with regret a dis- position among Methodist people to sit upright upon their seate during prayers. The tendency of tbis kind of spiritual uprightness is growing rapidly, especially among the young members of our congregations. As a rule, the choirs never kneel at all. They sit up and looi£ about, hunt up tunes, pass notes and whisper to each other. We could hardly expect any- thing better of them, for in manj instances not half of these singers in Zion belong to the cliurch. If the spirituality of a church can endure the strain put upon it by the average modern choir, it is proof against any calamity likely to befall it, it is, to say tbe least of it, impolite and dis- respectful for a congregation to refuse to assume the same attitude in prayer assumed by the preacher who is lead- ing the devotional exercises. David said "Let us how before the Lord," and as if impressed that this was not sufficient, he adds. "Let us kneelin his presence." Now all this may seem to many a small thing, but we beg to assure you that it involves a great deal more than appears upon the sur- face. It is in this way that we drift away from the old paths, lose the simplicity and spirituality of our wor- ship, and become careless. But in these days of crowded churches^ large dresses and extended bustles, it i^really too much to expect people to get up turn around, and then kneel down. How shall we meet the emergency and render it both convenient and com- fortable for our congregations to kneel during prayer We answer, by hav- ing all our churches provided with kneeling boards placed in the rear of each seat, and elevated five or six in- ches from tne floor. Then the wor- shiper can rise up and kneel down facing the altar, with the head resting on the seat just in front of him. Until this IS done, the pastor can hardly ex- pect the request, "Let us kneel in prayer," to be obeyed. It might be well lenough to have two or three kneeUng boards for the choir, and then employ a policeman or two to compel their use at every service. The very freedom of our methods and forms of worship have been taken ad- vantage ot by the godless and worldly- minded to introduce innovations and elements of discord among us. Let us BO arrange our houses of worship that there will be no excuse for a con- gregation sitting boldly upright and with open eyes etairing about during the solemn service of prayer.
