The editorolther?Aro«tcZ«throws out insults ibecause a statement recently made in the Chronicle has been contradicted. As far as ire are concerned no serious reflections were cast ou the Chronicle for the report referred to furthermore, we fail to see anything in Mr. Jenkins or his paper for any respectable journalist to envy. Our ambition is not in the crank line anyway. Fusrate. â€" Mr. F. Burton is a Y'orksliire man and a wealthy farmer 8 miles north of Markdale, lives in a beautiful brick residence. He hinted to 'some of the band boys recently that they might drive out to his place some evening and give them in his neighborhood a musical treat. The band did go last Wednesday, 22nd, and were treated like Princes. A lunch was provided by Mrs. Burton which was rich, abundant and of endless variety the boys say, the best they ever sat down to. Several of the neighbors gathered and all were debghted with the music ot the band, while the boys were "almost tickled to death" with the kind treatment they received at the hands of Mr. Burton and family. Mr. B. also gave $5, to the. bt^nd. Next. Litigation .^Tho following cases were recently up before the magistrates court in Markdale, viz â€" Mrs. Caswell, for selling liquor without license, case dismissed Caldwell, Hotel, for selling liquor on Sunday, fined $20 and costs ;\ Hanbury, Wholesale Liquor Store, for selling by the glass, two cases fined $20 and costs for first second referred to Solicitor for decision, and Benson, Wholesale Liquor Store, for sellmg by glass, fined $20 and costs. Wb will esteem it a fxvor if some person connected with the various churches and societies would keep us posted from time to time with such items of news as will be interesting to the public. We are sometimes asked why we did not make a note of so and so Of course we have to ask the question in return, why they did not let as know We cannot publish what we do not know except others inform us. Bsnca county has passed a by-law which provides that the day for nomiuation of candidates for reeves, deputy reeves and councillors in town- ships in the county shall be upon the last Monday but one in December. We hope our coupty will "go and do likewise," In rural districts it is al- most impossible for Tp. Clerks to get tlie ballots printed and delivered to the varioOiD poll clerks in the specified tame, espocially when the roads are badly blocked with snow as is often the case that particular season oi the year. The above change would give an extra week which would remove that ^reat difficulty. Our Village Police, Messsrs. Brown, Grant and Mathews, have taken a great deal of pains this season in the improvement of our streets and side- walks which are now in good condition with very few exceptions. We would suggest, lioweyier, that they should not exhaust their treasury entirely as the sidewalks should be gone over and repaired every month at least in order to nail down boards that will become loose and broken in the meantime. It is '\sery important to keep the planks well fastened, as a loose one is liable at any time to cause a serious accident and to keep them fast it would not be a bad idea to have a man go over the entire ground once a week and spike 'down any loose plank, and thus keep the sidewalks always in good re- pair, the cost of this would be trifling. 'GiEAND Excursion to Owen Sound and Wiarton, will be given under the auspices of Shelburne Lodge Ancient Order of United Workmen, on Tues- day, August lltli. The trip will be made via. C. P. R. to Owen Sound, thence by the new and commodious steamer Pacific to Wiarton. The train reaches Markdale at 8:40 a. m. and Owen Sound at 10:00. Owen Sound will be reached upon the return journey at G p. rn.» but here a staj of two hours wiU be made, the train not departing for home until 8 o'clock Those who wish x,o return next day can do so by paying 30 cents extra.
