THE SUGGESTION BOX During a recent visit bo northern Ontario, we exchanged recipes with homemakers who have a high repu- tation for delicious food. From time to time we are pulbli'shing their 'pet' recipes. Here are a few: FUDGE CAKE (Mrs. D. G. S.) 2 pkgs. salted peanuts, 1 can Weetened condensed milk, 2 cups crushed graham crackers or vanilla wafers*. 2 sqs. un- sweetened chocolate. Melt chocolate in douible boiler. Add milk and blena. Stir in cracker crumibs. Crush peanuts, spread half in bottom of g^eafeed pan, pour on I the partially cooked chocolate mix- ture and press down. Spread re- maining nuts on top. Chill to set. DARK GUMDROP CAKE (Mrs. L. M. K.) 2 eggs well beaten, 1 cup granulated saigar, 1 cup butter or shortening. 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 lb. gruihdropte, cut with scissors, 1 cuip sweetened apple sauce (thick), 2 cups all- purpose flour. '/4 tsp. baking powder, % lb. Sultana raisin^ (boiled 5 mins. in enough water to cover, drain and cool), 1 tsp. soda, dissolved in V^ cup boiling water. Mix sugar, butter, add well beaten eggs, salt, cinnamon and thick aipp- lesauce, half the flour and drained raisins. Add gumdroipa to rest of flour and add to batter. Stir in feo- da and hot water last. Cook in a covered casserole for 2 hrs, at 2'75- 300 degs. Remove cover last 5 mins. to brown top. BRAN MUFFINS (Mrs. W. M.) 2 heaping tbsjps. shortening, \'\ cup brown sugar, 1 egg, 1 cup milk (Prepared dry milk or whole milk), Vi t^p. salt. '/& cup flour, 2'/a tsips. baking powder. Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg. Add milk, sift flour, add baking powder. Stir in flour until it disappears. Pour in greased muf- fin tins. Bake in electric oven at 4O0 (^c'^rs, for 15 mins. I'KINCI'.SS CAKE (Mrs C. D. Cargoe and dis- cussed the subject "Are National Farm Organizations Effectve?" and the bulk of the discussion centered around the activities of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. The forum Would like to see the effortls of the Federation expanded in all fields, but felt that it was doing a good job and was as effective as it could be with present finances. iTidividuol members can get their views before the officers of the C.F.A. through the medium of the Farm Forum and more forums should he organized. There was also a good disucussion on oil heaters. Billie Johnston presided and conducted a contest. The next meeting will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Johnston. The pastor. Rev. W. M. Lee deliv- ered an able sermon in the church here on Sunday afternoon. Phillips, M.L.A. for North Grey, is said to have made representations to thite end and expects Mr. J, P, Johnston, M.L.A. for Bruce, Mr. Farquhar Oliver, M.L.A. for South Grey, and Mr. John 'H. Hannah, M.L.A. for Huron-Bruce, to follow along with him to procure a health unit es- tablished for Grey and Bruce, and use their influence to establish the office <ind its personnel in Owen Sound, Health unitte have been in opera- tion in some Ontario centres the past decade.
