Dancing- at 9 p.m. with wrought iron bands through which passed a crusader's sword from the Tower of London. A company of French infantry pro- vided a guard at Boulgone Castle. They were relieved by a guard of United Kingdom and Dominion troops who accompanied whe casket home on H. M. S. Verdun. General Wyatt also disclosed that six barrels of earth from Ypres Salient were put on board to spread in the Abbey tomb in which the body was to be placed. NOTICE F. T. Hill & Co., Ltd. MARKDALE, Ont. now UNKNOWN SOLDIER WAS CHOSEN FOR ABBEY The story of how the body of the Empire's Unknown Warrior was se- lected for burial in Westminster Ab- bey was given for the first time on Remembrance Day, November 11, in a letter to the London Daily Tele- graph by Brigadier-General L. J. Wy- att commander of the BriitsK troops in France in 1920. Receiving notification that the King had approved a suprgestion for burial of the Unknown Warrior in the Ab- bey, General Wyatt issued instruct- ions "that the body of a British sold- iers, which it would be impossible to identify, ahold be brought from each of the four areas â€" Aisnci Somme, Arras and Ypres â€" on the night of Novenvber 7." They were to be placed in the chapel of Saint Pol. The party bringing in each body was to return at once so there should be no chance of their knowing on which the choice fell. "The four bodies lay on stretchers, each covered by a Union Jack; in front of the altar was the shell of a coffin which had been sent from Britain to receive the remains. I se- lected one, placed it on the shell; screwed down the lid. The other bodies were removed and reburied in a military cemetary outside my head- quarters at Saint Pol. General Wyatt described the Jour- ney of the body homeward, how it went under escort to Boulogne where it was placed in a plain oak coffin The stoi-y is told of the British sailor who dived into the sea in order to secure an unexploded German mine so it could be taken ashore and exam- ined by experts. He risked his own life but the chances are he saved many others. •NOTICE TO CREDITORS .-Vll persons having claims or ac- counts against the late JOHN PORT- eous of the Village of Fleshei-ton, in the County of Grey, Retired Farmer, who died on the Fourth day of Decem- ber, 1939, are required to send full particulars thereof to the under- signed solicitor on or before the Twentieui day of Janurary, 1940.
