WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11. 1030 THE FLBSHpRTON ADVANCE K Fur Trader's Sea-going Car is First to Reach Bleak Shores of Hudson's Bay Route i aken by the Sea-going Ford from The Pas to Fort Churchill. ESKIMOS and Indiana watc'aed in amazement when Henry Hud- son's staunch little shi;\ The Dis- covery, sailed along the shores of the vast inland sea which later was to bear the name of the ex- pedition's leader. Although The Discovery displac- ed but 55 tons, she was to them a vcritablo Majestic. The excitement spread from tril.-o to tribe from the time the vessel pushed its way through the ice and was caught right of from the shores un'.il it reached the southernmost limits of James Bay, 1300 miles away. That was 320 years ago. But the nstcRi.shmc"nt v/as scare '!y greater than that among the dosceiidants of thoiie Eskimos and Indians when 8 strai<?e craft recently rolled ita vray al-ng off the coast of that eame body of water. Vhis was a Hea-King Fo/d, the fir. t automobile' of my sort ever to be v-n in the Hudson's Hay country. It was mounted on a scow FOUR-LEGGED CHICK Joseph Quigley, locaJ blacksmith, has a real freak in a four-legged chick. Along with 13 others it was and its motor geared to the scow's propeller, BO that it proceeded un- der its own power. Nor was that itn only claim to distinction, for it was one of the first four cars at The Pas, Mani- toba. Recently it was sold to a fur trader named Harris, who has lived among the Eskimos for years. He shipped it by rail to Mile liJfO at the Nelson River, at that time the er.d of the steel on the Hudson's Hay Railway. Car Propels Boat There the rear wheels were re- moved from the car and the ends of gasoline drums substituted. Belts xvere plated over these and arranged to drive the propeller of the scow. The fur trader, his Eskimo v.-ife, three children and another white man then climbed aboard and the strango craft headed down the river to Port Nelson. There addi- tional supplies were loaded and the Ford-propelled packet headed for the open sea, swinging northward along the coast toward Fort Churchill, 200 miles away. Mr. Harris intended to run the Ford over the barren land* about Fort Churchill in collecting fur. Other cars probably will be seen son on the shores of Hudson's Bay, for Fort Churchill has now been decided upon as the terminus of tho Hudson's Bay Railway in- stead of Port Nelson. When tho steel bonds linking it with civiliz- ation are completed, it may speed- ily become a center of activity boasting as many cars as The Pas, which now numlx?r forty. Tremendous development is ex- pected with the completion of the railway and the harnessing of the enormous undeveloped water power of the Nelson River the old voya- geur route to the Peace, Athabasca and Mackenzie volleys. Care of Teeth Is Of Vital Importance Neglect of the teeth is sure to re- sult in toothache. This means irrita- bility and suffering with impairment and loss of tooth structure. Food masticated by poor teeth and diseased gums becomes infected with bacteria, which takf into the otonvach seriously interfere with nu- trition by disturping digestion ;11 health must follow. The human mouth presents mosi favorable c?"ditions for growth of dangerous germs if the debris from different kinds Of . food is al- lowed to remain, the moisture and natural armth beiig exactly suited to their development. The teeth being largely lime, any acid long remaining in contact with them- erodes the surfaces, finally softening and destroying the struc- ture. An excessive acid condition of the mouth may result from systemic or local causes the taking of certain medicinal preparations; indgeston and dyspepsia; particles of food re- maining about the teeth which with the heat of the mouth, decompose I and produce acid; excessive use of sweets which fermenting generate acid; continued use of sour wines, fruits, et?. Certain forms of bac- teria produce acid, and there are bac- teria which dvelon only in an acid medium. Do not put off visiting the dentist every four or, at least, six months, that he may have an opportunity of making a careful examination of the teeth, removing any tartar and being sure thpt everything in right. Do not wait until there is pain often means loss of tooth structure, and a trying ordeal for both patient and dentist. By following these simple sug- gestions the mouth will be kept in a perfectly healthy condition, and the structure and color of the teeth preserved. WODEHOUSE which it was hatched was laid by ( "I suppose you know your little one of Mr. Quigley'.i barred rock town fairly well," remarked the re- hens. Orangevillc Sun. The following notice has been hatched on Tuesday and has two [ posted at an electric station in Ire- ! . rfpot sets of legs and feet, the fxtft-a pair being just in front of the usual two. Unfortunately the cur- land: Beware. To touch these wires Is cent arrival to the oldest inhabitant." "Rather." "Do you know Jew's walk." "No." "Well, they do" replied' the recent instan 4 , death.
