WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1928 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE 1 HOCKEY Markdale vs. Flesherton NOTE: The last was a tie 2-2 Thurs., March 22 BROOM BALL Proton vs. Red School Broombali Starts at 7.30 sharp ADMISSION 25 and 15 cts. Cougars and Red Men Tie In 2 All Game I Markdale trying to hold their lead I caused the game to lag, but Geo. Mc- Tavish, the veteran of the game, se- cured one on a close-in shot. Both I teams tried their hardest to secure a solo to make it their victory. The York I bros. played a hard game on the wings 1 and with McCutcheon at centre made a snappy foreward line. Henry and BROOMBIILL LEAGUE The game of broombali, which was somewhat unknown until this winter, has been brought to the front by the league formed by T. W. Findlay, and comprised five teams. Mr. Findlay has given considerable time and thought to the working out of this league of broombali, and it has been a decided success, as it has been played I down until only the finals remain. As : will be seen by the score sheet, the I Red School team won first place quite I easily, but it was a good race for I second place, and the chance to play off with the Red School for who wins I the league. This was won by Proton. I There has been a lot of fun and dur- ! ing the playing off of the whole , league a good fellowship feeling has j prevailed, which alone makes any sport worth while. There â- have been twenty games played in all, and the first game of the finals between the Red School and Proton was played on Friday night and resulted in a tie â€" 1-1. The second game is to be played this Tuesday night and the third game on Thursday night before the hockey game. This will be the final game unless a deadlock arises out of the Inst game, when it may be necessary to play the 4th game. Following is the standing of the different teams: Red School 33 points Proton 24 points Findlay's 23 points Phillips' 19 points Ceylon 14 points VANDELEUR Mr. and Mrs. Black, who visited re-1 cently with Mr. and Mrs. J. The game was not quite up to the mark as others here this winter, but just the same some real hockey was presented by both teams. Markdale made the first counter, when McCutcheon, the fastest man Markdale had, counted one against Batchelor, after ten minutes of play. Armstrong evened up the first period with one for the Cougars, shortly after his wicked shot beating Hand, the new man in the nets. The second period saw no scoring defence, making brilliant rushes and using their body to much effect. Hand, the new man in the nets, cer- tainly clears his shots, and was on the job the whole game through. The substitutes on both teams took the place of the ones resting to good advantage. Merf. Mercer handled the bell to the satisfaction of every- one. Kelly securing 3 penalties, Nuhn 2 and Thurston 1. Mr. Isaac Carter of Sunnidale Town- ship met with a fatal accident Tues- day afternoon while working in his gravel pit on the 5th concession, when an overhanging bank of frozen gravel broke, crushing him with its weight. Help was at hand and he was rushed to his residence where medical aid was quickly procured but it was of no avail as his hip and chest were al- most completely crushed. He lived about three hours, and, although suf- Messrs. F. R. Boland and Jim Cargoe) acted as captains for the games, and an exciting and interesting hour was spent with the honors about even. Mr. Howard Graham directed proceedings. Mrs. F. Davis and Miss Myrtle Free- man gave excellent readings, while all joined heartily in the songs. At the next meeting, March 26, there will be a debate o-i the subject, "Resolved, that the inventor has contributed more to human happiness than has the leg- islator." The debaters will be Mrs F. R. Boland and Mrs. Wyville on the affirmative, and Messrs. Charles McLean and Norman Genoe on the negative. Mrs. F. Davis, Miss Myrtle Freeman, Messrs. H. Magee and R. Freeman were appointed a committee to arrange for the play entitled "The obstinate family." to be given at the meeting on April 9th. In the report of the debate given in last week's items we should have said that the afirmative side won. Miss Thompson and Lundy Johnston were the debaters.
