March 5th. 1924 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE THE Flesherton Advance W. H. THURSTON, EcUtor r j By ( HOME By One of The Old Boys HOW ONE CAME HOM Mention of air craft bringa to mind the theatrU-al home-comiiij? of one of the home lads during the day.< of war. when aeroplanes firsl hovered in the blue, and young men learned to be aerial chauffers for Death The modem village was all strung lip to think in terms of war, and fath- ers as they worked visioncd their sons abroad in the niidat of battle charges, wlu-n possiiily they were deep in the "luxuries" of a rest camp, or repairing the harrased roads of France, or en- gaged in the continual fi^ht with the smallest enemy of all. Quietly it drowsed along, it's mind half way around the world, ((uiet in the hea* of a summer's day and the song of the anvil carried up the street to be met at the corners by the quiet thud of the shoemakers hammer. In the midst of this one heard the roar of a distant motor, and searching the blue located a white unfeathered bird with motionless outstretched wings that sped faster than any fea- thered one. Flying lowt. it came near, soared o^r the villa,7o aid sear- ched for a level spot in its outs'.cirts. What could there be to bring a l)ird man Home, for no Home boy.s then had joined the flying corps ? A ear soon reached the .spot, down by the fair grounds, and here, standing by the great bird of steel and cloth, was a helmeted, goggled bird of war, and a familiar voice called the people all by name. One of the Home lads had come home l)y air, and brought its first aeroplane to the village. This was his qualifying trip, and they had not known of hi.s enterprise at all. How homes were thrown open to him, and how his every word was hung upon a.s the word of a sage ! His stay was short, and to the air he took next morning. The plane took the air like a great white heron, and clumsily set- tled itself on its unseen cushion. A few safe evolutions ; a circling round the village, and with a wave of his hand the hero traced his way across the country that we travelled in the dust and grime, to the distant aero- drome Over woodland and checker-board fields, laced with ribbons of silver and dotted with lakes of blue, his course took him until a corner of the great lakes, set in a vast basin of level land, opened up before him and warn- ed him away to the south, where a brown blotch upon the land spoke of the training camp he had left the day before To this day the spectacular visit of the Hero is talked of with proud rec- ollection. He was not then an hero. But since that day he has travelled Upon the breezes on many a trip, and more dangerous ones. He has played his part, and, too, he has shown that he was made of stem, unfcaring stuff. He has Iteen welcomed with chaffing words from flights that might have left a vacancy at the mess table â€" but he does not talk of that so much. And he has come back to the clerk- ship that he left. cate presents an interesting and log- ical view of "the retired farmer ques- tion." I Even in Meaford we have heard ; slighting remarks directed at retired farmers. But if all retired farmers should suddenly leave town here is \ about what would happen : I A lot of houses would be left vac- ant; many taxes would bo unpaid; [jrocers, butchers, drygoodsmen and ) printers would lose a lot of patrons; j churches would be decimated and im- | poverished; professional men would j have less work; labor would be scarce and dear; electric light would be us- ' ed less and cost more. And .'^o the list could be extended ' indefinitely. ,- There should be less ' .said about the undesirability of re- j tired farmers and a little more about the desirability.
