August 1, 1923 THE FLESHERTON ADVANCE "Lumbeg" Drums Sport* ie Answer is the FORDSON TRACTOR H. DOWN & SONS Flesherton, Ontario 4423 The following from the Erin Advo- cate will be of interest to Orangemen wherever they are, and others as well : "A special feature of the parade was the presence of two real "Belfast Lumbeg drums," which were in charge of four Ulster Volunteers, 1 Ireland at the time of the rebellion The approach of the big drums brought the hands of the people to ther ears, as they were pronounced ear-.splitters. These drums stand out prominently in the history of the struggle for civil and religious liberty in Ireland. In the early days of fac- tion fighting when modes of signaling were not as common as they are now, ! it was thought to invent something j that would be heard by the brethren | as a "call to arms," hence the "Lum- | beg drum" came into being. Certain beats were instituted as a "protestant signal," and these drums can be dis- , tiiu-tly heard from eight to ten miles > away. Space does not permit *o go into detail of the innumerable occas- ions upon which the ''old Lumbegs" saved our brethren from persecution and even death. However, as they headed the Orangcville lodge in the parade here, it was something new, and now that we know something of their history it fills us with pride that ( the parade was favored this year by . one of the "old time Lumbegs.' 1 Every Ulster Orangeman knows and loves theh sound of the "old Lumbegs." I Bunched Hits For Three Runs and Won First of Two Games To De- cide Winner Flesherton demonstrated their sup- riority over the Owen Sound North Wellington seniors in the first game of the play-off to decide the winners, when they bunched hits in the ninth lining, driving in three runs and vvin- ling the game 4 to 3. There have been numbers of real good games here this year, but we beileve Mon- day's affair was the best we have seen, and both pitchers were in the best of form. Zack, the Owen Sound Indian pitcher, twirled a faultless game up to the seventh inning, never allowing a hit, and only two men reaching second base. Zack had 12 men who faced him lay down their bat in disgust, and Goldsmith had 14 Owen Sounders waving at the air in their anxiety to connect. Three times was Hec. in a hole when a hit meant the game, and each ttme^e retired the side, generally with a s.o. A big crowd was inattendance to see the Scenic City go under, but their hopes wer not very bright until the ninth when Zack seemed to weaken. Owon Sound's first run came in the initial inning when McDonald secur- ed a hit and Miller brought him home-. Three men struck out. In the third they scored again when Zack hit a grounder to third, which Dow threw high to first and Airth missed, Zack going to second. Vasej hit for two bases, scoring the former But in the fourth was one time Gold smith distinguished himself, when with none down Hilliar flied t< Howard in centre field and Matchet struck out. " Zack walked and the liases were loaded with two down. Weiland was too anxious to secure a hit and his swings Wended perfectly with Hec.'s bends and he fanned. Owen Sound's next run came in the sixth when Keeling hit for two bases and came home on a blackball. In the eighth Hec. got into trouble again with two on and one down and again his grooves proved too much for the next two and they, too, fanned. The ninth inning saw them easy outs. Flosherton's fir.'t rim came in the ucky seventh when Goldsmith hit for wo bases to loft field and scored on Gibson's grounder and he was safe at rst when Vasey failed to hold the hrow which was low. THE BIG INNING The ninth inning opened with Hesherton two down and hopes of ictory very slim indeed. Goldsmith >pened up his war club and hit for wo bags, and scored when Gibson onnected for the same, after McLeod l fanned. Zack retired here in avor of Debussige, another Indian, who didn't fare any better than his nate. Airth was the second out, laving hit a grounder and advancing iibson to third. Dillon came up with fire in his eyes and a heavy bat that mocked the ball for two bases, scor- ng Gibson, and tieing the game. E. Vluir drew a walk and each advanced base on a pass ball. Dillon used lis head here and bothered the play- ers, getting repeated throws to catch lim off the bag. With one strike on oldsmith he took a big lead off third and drew the catcher's throw, which went wild, and Dillon romped home with the winning run. It was a beautiful victory, after Owen Sound's declaration at the commencement of the season that the games would amount to only practic games, victory would be so easy for Owen Sound. Vandeleur lost their first game in the second section of the Centre Grey League at Dundalk on Thursday last by very loose playing, allowing Dun- dalk three of their six runs. Vande- leur out-hit Dundalk 2 to 1. The vis- itors were over an hour late in arriv- ing, but played real ball when they got going. 'Buck" had nine strike- outs to his credit and Douglass two, but it was errors in the pinches that cost Vandeleur the game. Dundalk had protested the game before it commenced on account of Harold Beard of Markdale playing for the Vans, as he wasn't passed by the League. Ilo\ve\vr, an Executive meeting was held on Friday evening last and Beard and Gordon Beaton 01 Markdale were given permission to finish out the season wii.Ii Vaii'leleur.
