Down, ami Charges Dismissed Against Macarow &___< -*- CT~. B General Manager of Merchant* Bank Held Innocent of Wilful Deception Montreal, May 22. Judge Cueson this morning dismissed the charge agaiubt D C. Macarow, general manager of the defunct Merchants Bank, that he wilfully made false and deceptive statements con- cerning the bank'a condition in the monthly return made by law to the Finance Department for October, 1921. The charge was laid by an official of the Finance Department. It is likely n appeal will be entered by the Dominion Government. D. C. Macarow was summoned to the Police Court, along with Sir iloutigu Allen, president of the bank, who was negligent of signing the Government return for October, 1921. The ease of the Crowa was that Mr. Macarow should have known and reported to the Finance Department the tact that the.bank's re- serve had been lost in the disistrouu loans which afterwards compelled it to sell out to tha Bank of Montreal. The defence, in the main, pleaded that Mr. Macarow relied on the return prepared by the accountant of the bank from state- ments of branch managers, that it was impossible in the short time at the dis- posal of t in bank officials, before sending in the return, twenty days following the period reported on, to check the hjjure.---, and that the actual amount of the lutu was a question of opinion in October, 1821. The Government's charges were made following a test return made by Geo. Edwards, i Toronto accountant. Keep The Dust Down During the past few years the citizens have been livn g in a twirl of dust, and it is about time that something uns done to keep down this menace to public health. Every car that passes raises a dust that penetrates everywhere, and the only way to stop it is by either oiling or watering the roods. The former, although costly; would be good for the whole summer, while water would have to be sprinkled every day A good second lund water wagon could be secured at a nominal price and tha relief would bo iristuitan- eous. What hii.s our council got to say about this! The citizens practically de- mand some relief and it is up to the council to do something. Wilson, son of Mr. 'Mark Wilson, Flosherton, to Miss Alice 'Cisileof Markdule, formnrly of Flesh- 1 ertou. Opera House Au accident occurred on Tuesday morning of this week to Mr. Edward Littlejohns of the Weat Back Line, four ' and n half miles from Fleshurtou, which might have proved serious, but fortun- ately the only result was u bad shaking up. He was working with an old roller; in H lield when suddenly the tonuue , broke letting the table of the roller fall forward, throwing Ed. in between the! horses, who started to run. Tho broken ' end of the tongue plowed Into the ground and rolled Ed. alouir, thereby preventing him from yettiun under the roller und being smashed to death. Finally the horses were brought to a stop by the plowing tongue and Mr. Littl^-johns was able to scramble out. It was a narrow escape and one he does not want to be repeated. There seems to be more accidents occurring to farm hands by the handling t-f rollers than by any nther implement used in agriculture. p H o T o t i p L A Y S Thin THURSDAY Commencing at 8 o'clock Samuel Goldwyn PRESENTS "The Ace of Hearts" with Lon.
