FRED FINDER, GHOOSINGJUBRICANTS Practical Advice Regarding l^e of Machine Oils. Tliey Should Possess the Qualities of Adhesion und Cohesion Mineral, Vegetable and Fish Oils AH In Use Planting Potatoes for Sei-d. (Contributed by Ontario Department of Agriculture, Toronto.; WHILE possibly every tare and attention Is given to the mechanism of farm machinery, few, If any, give consideration to the quality of tho lubricants used. The dfacieney of any power is ser- iously affected by poor or improper lubrication of surfaces in frictlomil contact, indeed, it is estimated at about 50 per cent, of the available amount of energy in useful work. The object of lubrication is not only to reduce friction, but also v o carry away whatever excess of heat may bo generated, for a certain amount of work will produce a givf.i quantity of heat, but the carrying away of the heat is only an incident;'.! condition, for heating of the boari::g should not arise. Oils for lubricalini: purposes should pOFscss two qualities thai of cohesion and adhesion. Their cohe- sive properties lie in the character of their molecules to cling (o each other, and their adhcsivi- qiMlity to Klick to anything else. The union of lliese two properties make up what is known as viscosity, that is the body of the lubricant. This in a greater degree than any other factor deter- mines HIP lubricating value of the oils. While viscosity of an oil dc^er- n:ines its value as a lubricant, fluid- ity indicates its adaptability to any one particular machine. It is because of the struggle between viscosity und fluidity that the snme oil will not do for the heavy engine shaft, and for light weight machinery. Kaeh re- quires an oil with just Bufl'u-icnt "body" to carry the load without bo- ing squeezed out of the hearing. Beyond this condition the more fluid and easier moving the oil the better. A thick lubricating film of good resisting body is needed for the line shaft of an ocean liner, but a drop of the same oil would put a wn.tch out of commission. Practically all the lubricants now in use are of the mineral oil founda- tion t routed to free lln;ui from i;cid, and to Improve their suitability 1'or special purposes. Sperm oil is spe- cially good for liiRh :ip. ed lijiln machinery: fur heavy heuiln:?:! cas'ur oil, but both me expensive. Sim- ple tc-KlH may bt- applied to lubricants for quality and viscosity. To test for acid saturate a bit of cotton waste with tho siiHpoclod oil, and lay It open upon the surface of polished stoel or brass for twenty-four hours. If steel tihowH even a slight corro- sion or, if the brans turns green, free acid is present. To test for sunnily adulterants place a drop of oil upon a piece of glass inclined at such an angle as to permit it to flow gently down. If any gum, resins or other viscosity producing elements arc present, they will be apparent by thu color of the oil streak, as the adul- terants deposit thiMiiHolvi's upon tho glass In tho form of sediment. A Kooil quality of lubricant will not break down, when rubbed be- tween (h(! linger tips, ati quickly, as a poor one. II would be economy in throe \\aya at leiist to uso two different kinds of oil; economy of power, of nuu-binc wear, and of oil, and in addition there would be greater cilieicncy. Jao. Evans, 0. A.
