BIKM1X CHAM'S INDUSTRIES. Artificial Eyes, Police Whistles, Jew's Harps, Some of the Lines. In Birmingham, which is one of th-> chhf manufacturing cities of England, a number of small article* are prcduced, some of which are of a decid.dly curious character and for which the Birmingham maker h^as to some extent created his own market. For example, it is not r lie-rally known that Birmingham the principal source of the Vjcrld'* supply of Jew's harps. For 80 years tho industry has been car- ped on in the vicinity of Ashte- drow, a venerable quarter of the city, by members of the Trowman family. The Zulu musician, 'for example, has taken very kindly to the Jew's harp and needs an es- pecially large size to suit his some- what capacious mouth. * Another survival is the trade of gold-beating, which, it is claimed, ' ig one of the oldest in the- city. To a large extent this trade has gone i to Germany through the competi- : tion cf che-ap labor, but it is claim- <. ed that the best gold leaf is still made in England. For several years increasing in- terest has been centred upon the problems which the Conference has elected to consider. The much-dis- cussed eugenics movement is one of the channels in which this interest has been manifested. The well- defined femininht movement is an- other out-cropping of the general groping for new race ideals. These aid correlated topics will be con- sidered at the coming Conference. The organization of a national body to continue the work inaugur- ated bv the Conference itself, will be affected. This national body, it is anticipated, will arrange for an- nual meetings and in a very short time will lay the- foundation for a world movement for an improved race. The list of those who will take part in the Conference include* many men and women of national prominece. Vahamidan had for some time been learning the principles of Tan- trc worship from a monk. To com- plete his studies he needed a dead body. After several unsuccessful attempts to procure one, he pro- posed to his wifo that she should aid him iu 'his secret studies by sur- rendering her life. He assured her he would restore her as suon as he had finished his worship. At midnight the devoted wife ac- coirpanied her husband to the cre- mation ground, and thre, with her consent, he cut her in two and be- gan his worship to the goddess Kali. WOMEN IN AFRICA, Have in.- Privilege f Marrying Whom They Plea**. Although woman in Africa is re- garded as property she has certain rights which are seldom infringed upon, and of these the most im- portant is her right to marry whom she pleases, or rather to refuse to marry one who does not please her, says the Southern Workman. There are two reasons for this. First, women married against their wills have been known to commit | suicide. Second, women married ; against their wills have murdered their unloved husbands, usually strangling them when asleep. So, in forcing one's self upon one of I these women there ia liability to a! i great loss the loss of valuable pro- ; perty or of no less highly prized: life. The young girls are well cared for, partly that they may be come- ly and draw many suitors. Every ] girl will tell you frankly that she | wishes to marry and have a good husband and children. Every fa- ther is anxious to have his daugh- ters marry well. To obtain a wife one must pay a dowry in cattle to the father, or. should the father be dead, to the nearest male relative. If a girl is much sought after, her father naturally asks a larger dow- ry. When the man has paid part of the dowry the father may gire consent to a provisional marriage and permit the couple to live to- gether. Should the husband be too slow in paying the remainder of the dowry his wife is taken from him. Trial marriages are common and! can be set aside bv either party. : Their principal objects in marriage : are mutual helpfulness and the perpetuation of the race.
