VICINITY CHIPS Mr. Edward Whitten of thi^i village ba.s a taluable ploc in bis garden. The plot measures some twenty feet s<|uare andlt con'ains 600 ginsing roots which will soon be ready for digging md cur- ing. We would be afraid ro estimate what this little bit of land is worth to Mr. Whitten, but it is anywhere from $400 to $700. Il reiiuire.s five years to bring ginsing ictu maturity and a year and a half for the seedi to sprout, which probably accounts for so little of it being raised. Few people have sufficient patience to wait five or six yein for a return on their investment. - A peculiar incident occurred here last j weeic which \» worthy of record. Mr. P. Loucks of the Sour mill has a flock of i ducks and be has plenty of water where- ' in they can sport. The other morning j this tlcck nas added to by one. A stray Mallard had found the place so charmini;; that he decided to locate with his domesticated brethren and help them di2 water worms anl bugs. For three days he remained and became so tame Mr. Elmo Blakeley spent Saturday that members of the family were allowed and Sunday at the parental home. ! to get within a few feet of him. Misses Irene and Evadi Wilson are visiting relatives in Durham. Wreck Near Owen Sound A costly wreck occurred on Sunday at Murray's dump, ne.tr Uwen Sound, wiiich will total a loss of thousaada of dollars. There were 45 cars of thi-ou^h freight for the west composing the train. A steel cual car went over the embankment and ten big new box cars packed with pack- age freight for western Canadian points followed, turning at right angles with the track, a splintered bunch of wreckage. The wrecking train from Orangeville started for the scene and when near Crombies it got oflT the track as well, causing mure delay. The track w^as ii')i cleared in time fur Monday's train south, which did not arrive down until 2. p. m. About four hundred feet cf the track was torn up. and at Kimberley. Mr^. J. Turner present visiting her IS friends, Mr. and Mrs, Adam Hislop of the Valley. Misses Ohve Knowles and Mary Miller of Owen Sound were :,'ueati of Miss Lulu Mitchell over Sunday. Miss Lizzie Armstrong, matron cf the boarding school at Norway House, Keewatin. called on relatives here on Tuesday. j Mi.ss Mabel Hartingh ot Owen Sound is spending a fortni:^ht with Miss Lulu Mitchell. The Advance had a pleasant but short call from Bro. Irwin of the Durham Chronicle on Monday, who had beeu ; •djwu Heathcote way visiting relatives. I Messrs. R. Tucker of the suburbs died at the home of a dauguter in Toronto en Saturday, where he had been undergoirg special treatroeut. The remains weie interred in a Toronto cemetery on Mon- day. Mr. Tucker at one time drove tlie Fleshorton-Durham stage until the ad- vent of the railway. '< Mr, James Woodburn of Eugenia, a much respected old resident of that place, passed away Monday morning at the age ot 88 years. No particulars of Mr. Woodburn'a life are to hand. The funeral took place to Salem yester- day (Wednesday). The deceased gentle- man hits been in failing health for some time. He leaves behind his aged (tart- ner, to whom much sympathy isexteuded by many warm friends and neighbors. Rev. 'W. G. Banna. Field Seor.>tary of the Dominion .\lliance, spoke in the Methodist church on Wednesday evening of last week on the work of the Alliance. His address dwell on the present tend- ency to ignore tiie Sabbath as a day cf rest. He showed clearly the serious dangers meaacing the rest-day as now enjoyed in Canada, from foreign immi- gration, American capital, the lai ways of the West, th." gro' iug use of auto- mobiles, the increasing love of pleasure South Grey Exams The South Grey Entrance examination results arrived on Tuesday cf this week. The who Li helping is that cheerful individual Either you are a help to your town and community or you are a drawback. There is no middle course, if you are of those who do nothing for the welfare but simply stand around and criticize those who are trying to help things along, you are a drawback to any place. It makes no ditference if you are attending to your own business, and even making a success of it ; If you are decrying what the other man ia doing you are a detri- ment rather than a benefit. The man Durham At the closing day rices in Listowel last week, John Calvert's "Paddy Mc- Kinley" of this place, cam-j in first in a field of horses from Toronto, and other good race centres. To ttjose who don't know it, we might .ay that Paddy is just a trifle the best horse this part of country hait seen for some time, judging from his performance on the yack this summer. On Wednesday afternoon of last week as we were running off the paper a very heavy wind and rain storm passed over town and for a few minutes it was dark as night. During the brief storm the furnitue company met with considerable loss but the rain coming first and then the wind, was no doubt the causs of saving a number of lives. The brick walls of the new addition were just about completed but the timbiis had not been put in position to strengthen them. In 12S.S time than it takes to tell it, about seventy feet of the upper story on the west side was blown to the ground, the weight of brick knocking down and breaking several of the large timbers used in construction. Some of the heiyy main pipes for the sprinkler system being installed were also bent out of shape and rendered practically useless. Several man had been engaged where the biick fell but left r.<i escape the rain, and they were not a minute too son in getting out of the way. Fevershaml places that are troubled need the help of the nuieter parts in maintaining a firm and united resistance against persistent, selfish aggression. Instances wore cited of the good already done by the .\lliance in freeing men from a week of sven days' work, as well as preventing attempted impositions on labor. The .Advance had a delightful little chat on Monday with Mr. F. B. Akitt of Collingwood, who with his wife, has been visiting friends iu this vicinity. About forty years ago Mr. Akitt came to Flesherton to learn the blacksmithing liusiness with the late J. H. Heard. For thirty years he has been a resident of Collingwood. On Sunday Mr. Akitt attended the Methodist Sabbath echuol here, aud spoke to the children. He has beeu a member of the Maple street church Sabbath school in Collingwood will for 'hirty years aud his whole soul is ' bound up in this work among the young people. Recently he was houored by having a clas.s of young ladies named *fter him. Each carries her class pin, announcing herself a member of the Akitt Bible class. This is certainly an honor of which Mr. Akitt may justly feel proud. To The Advance he paid a high tribute to the work being doue here, where he got his first inspiration, and to the conscientious labors of the present superintendent, Mr. W. H. Bunt. He has very pleasant memories of I he school here and of many of the old workers who have passed away, the in- fluence of which and whom he tays has been felt by him throughout bis whole life. We were more than ple;ised to grasp the hand of this genial old gentle- man, who still conducts business iu his home town. ; who gives other people credit for honest, I worthy motives aud, whenever a move- j niept is l.iunched for the public good, Lgives credit to its instigators as meu who I are. according to their lights, doing what they think is the best for the town in which they live.
