Those who most severely criticize the Arab horse are, for the most part, those who know least about him. I recently heard a very prominent, able and generally well-informed veterinary surgeon, in a public address, speak some- what disparHgiiiiily of the Arab, as com- pared with the Thoroughbred. The gentleman aflerwatds admitted to me that he had little personal knowledge of the Arab, but had for some time superin- tended an extensive breeding and racing establishment of Thoroughbred.s, and had himself owned Thoroughbred sires for service. He had thus naturally be- come prejudiced in favor of the Thorough- bredâ€"a horse good enouuh I readily acknowledged, for any man to love and the extent of being troublesome. I have never seen an Arabian vicious, shy, or showing signs of fear." Of how great practical valiK, and what a source of comfort, safety aud pleasure, in these days of autrunobilcs and trad ion engines, are such qualities as gentleness, courage and horse sensa. I have not had an extensive pereonal experience or knowledjje of the Arab horse, and have, therefnrc, quoted from others of very much greater knowledge, to prove the good (jualities of the pure Arab, and his great value to produce as a sire, frjni other llian Arab mares, accord- iug to the ch.'iraoter, class and breeding of 'he dams, t'ood work horses, driving, saddle and cavalry homes and general hacks, the Atah blood giving to all of them wonderful endurance and strength, soundness of cimstitution, beauty of form and action, aud particularly a eentleneas of disposition and ci>urage combined, not to be fund elsewhere among horse- admire, and of course for some purposes ' superior to the Arab. Sir Wilfred Scawen Rlunt, of Sussex, 1 j b„ught him from J. A. P.
