A serious accidentwas narrowly averted on Saturday at Munthaw's hotel, when the large stable roof came within an ace of collapsing under its heavy weight of snow. The plates and rafters were cracked, mak- ing reports which could be heard several rods away. All animals in the stable were hastily removed, props were Improvised, and a dozen men mounted the roof and cleaned the wet snow from it, thus preventing the threatened collapse. It was fortunate that the roof gave such ample warning and that it occurred in the daytime.
