On Saturday last at a barn raising for Alex. Fawcett, lot 6, con. 5, Euphrasia, an accident of a serious nature occurred, in which five men were wounded. After the timber had been put together in bents and the first one raised and stayed in the usual way, the lower girt was put in place when three or four men got upon it in order to put the upper girt in its place, but owing to the bent not being sufficiently braced, the weight on the lower one caused the stay to give way when down came the standing bent upon 30 men injuring five, as follows; John Ferris was struck on the head and sholder knocking him senseless ; W.J. Leary was struck across the back and held fast ; Gustis Burrett jumped, lighting on a stone breaking his leg ; Daniel Wallace jumped and fell, and another jumped upon him, putting Wallace's ankle out of joint; Wm. J. McGee also strained his arm while jumping. Ferris and Leary were thought to be fatal cases but after the lapse of some two hours they both showed signs of animation. Drs. Christoe, Carter, and McBride were immediately despatched for, and did all in their power for the injured ones, and good hopes are now entertained for the recovery of the worst cases. After the wounded were cared for the raising of the building was proceeded with. This should be a warning against the reckless racing, so common in connection with the erection of frame buildings, and uncalled for noise and disorder so prevalent when contesting for a victory in such matters.
