- Full Text
As our readers are aware a petition in favor of the submission of the Scott Act in this county was recently forwarded to the Government, and it was hoped by the friends of the Act that no difficulty would be met with, as the petition contained considerably more than the requisite number of names; however, it looks now as if there had been some serious neglect in having the petition properly prepared, and the work will very likely have to be done all over again. One of the chief objections to the present petition is that instead of asking for its submission for the whole county last Fall, as it should have been, to make it legal, some of the petitions asked for its submission in particular townships, and that the list of names were simply cut off and attached to new ones properly filled up. These and other objections appear to make it likely that the present effort has been in vain, and that while we are surrounded with Scott Act counties our own will continue to be exempt from the provisions of the Act for some time yet. -O.S.
