To S. E. Grey Electors
Mr. Edwards at the nomination slated that Canadians consume 85 per cent of all farm products. That Sir Robert Borden introduced penny postage, and he inferred that I do not favour having manufacturing plants in our towns.
Canadians consume about 40 per cent of what we produce in good years and just 60 per cent in bad years. The average will run less than 50 per cent. Sir William Mullock introduced penny postage when he was Postmaster General in Sir Wilfred Laurier's cabinet. I favor as intensive an industrial development as is healthy for Canada as a whole. I am always glad when factories are running full time. Then I know that the workers are busy and happy, and that Canadian citizens elsewhere are prosperous enough to buy the products of the factories. I know that the cheaper the goods the more will be sold, and the busier the workers will be. I know a high tariff makes dear goods.
Yours sincerely,
