Lends Weight to Rumor of Split
E. J. Garland Spoke at Priceville on Friday — Miss McPhail Present
E. J. Garland, federal member of Bow River, Alta., speaking at the annual meeting of the South Grey U.F. O. meetng [sic] at the village of Priceville Friday, gave weight to the rumors which have been current for some time that a section of the Progressives in the House had under advisement breaking away from the main body of that party.
Mr. Garland advised the large gathering not to be alarmed at any radical movement that might take place within the Progressive party at Ottawa. He stated that it would not be anything very radical, but would mean in the main that a certain section of the group would foreswear allegiance in so far as the present close co-operation with the Government went.
The member devoted the greater part of his address to an attack on the banking monopoly. He claimed that there was an overcapitalization of the big companes and denied the claim that present conditions were due to high wages. As proof of this he pointed out that the average yearly wage in five of the leading industries was only $722. He advised the same intensive organization among the farmers to solve their economic problems.
Miss Agnes McPhail M.P., spoke briefly at the meeting. She justified her position in voting against the action of Hon. James Murdock, minister of labor, in his withdrawal of funds from the Home Bank a day or two before its collapse on information he obtained as a member of the Cabinet. She introduced Mr. Garland to the audience.
The meeting was held in Watson's Hall and was well attended. Joseph Goodfellow occupied the chair.
The officers elected were: Joseph Goodfellow, Dundalk, president; Robt. Aitcheson, Sullivan, vice-president; Michael E. Murray, Ayton, secretary-treasurer; James Booth and John Whtieford [sic], Normanby, auditors.
Following the meeting of the political organizations the annual meeting of the U.F.O. Co-operative Association was held. John F. Martin, of Paris, was the principal speaker and he dealt particularly with cooperative marketing and the advantages to be derived by the farmers in co-operatng [sic] in the sale of all their produce.
The officers elected were: Pres., Thos. H. Binnie, Priceville: Mrs. Harris, vice-president; M. E. Murray, aecrtary-treasurer; U.F.O. riding director, Mrs. Pedlar, Feversham; U. F. Y.P.O. riding director, Stewart Mc-Arthur, Durham.
The next annual meeting will be held on the second Friday in June next year at Priceville.
