parents and guardians of pupils in grades 1 and 2 of elementary schools in the dist rict in the forthcoming pro gram involving polio vaccina tion the provincial minister of health dr mackinnon phillips recently announced such a pro gram was being planned to start early in april for pupils in those two specific grades enough vaccine will be avail able for the approximately 2j0- 000 children in the group se lected this group forms a large crosssection of the age group most vulnerable to polio it is hoped that all parents and guardians concerned will lend their cooperation to the local health authorities so that the giving of this vaccine may lie carried on as expeditiously as possible said dr x f tom linson it is hoped that it may provide protection against po liomyelitis he explained that the vac cine made by the connaught laboratories of the university of toronto is being provided i trial without cost to the local board of health it had been proven harmless in tests in the united states last year where 430000 children received a similar pre paration its ue in ontario at thi time would he in the na ture of a further effort to ascer tain on a trial basis the value of the vaccine the medical ohicer of health explained that the vaccine is given in three injections by a procedure similar to that used in giving diphtheria toxoid the dose is relatively small the first two injections arc given a week or ten days apart and the third is given four weeks after the second in emphasizing that the co operation of all involved per sons is necessary dr n f tomlinson said that request forms would soon be distrib uted for signature by parents or guardians i would like to emphasize once again he said that polio vaccine is harmless and it well may be that it is the answer
