central testing station tor poultry breeding stock is nearlng completion it is expected to be ready to re ceive the first birds entered in the new random test policy on apr 1 the new building marks an other forward step in the rec ord of performance for poultry that has been in operation for thirtyfive years in the interest of improving poultry breeding in canada located on the central ex perimental farm ottawa the station will serve poultry bree ders in any part of the coun try its purpose is to provide breeders with a means of test ing representative samples of their birds under uniform con ditions of feeding housing and care the station a onestorey bui ding contains ps pens identical in size 12xi6 arranged on either ide of a central alley the building is 425 feet long with a central block containing a feed room and an eg4 storage room with controlled tempera tures kach of the 6s pens will accommodate 50 birds and since each breeders entry will con sist of 100 birds this pennits each entry to be housed in two pens one on either side of the central alley to allow for any differences in temperature or other conditions due to the lo cation of the pens equipment in the pens is so arranged that droppings can be removed and eggs gathered from the central alley water is brought to the partitions be tween the pens so two pens can be supplied from the one stouffville constant uniform mixture the mash will be fed from a selffeeder in each pen the entire operation is designed to insure that all pens have identical treatment in order that any difference in the performance record of the birds will be jdue to inherited factors and not to ariations in feeding housing and man agement the four end pens and those in the corners next to the feed room will be treated as buffer pens for the first year or until it is established that conditions in them are no different than in pens with birds on either side of them they will be used to house a random bred strain developed by the central ex perimental farm and not as test pens there will thus be 60 pens available or enough to accom modate the entries from 30 breeders each entry will con sist of one 30dozen crate or 360 eggs drawn by poultry in spectors of either the canada department of agriculture or the provincial departments of agriculture from one days production of a poultry breed ers flock all the eggs from the var ious entries will be brought to a central point and hatched at the same time in the same incubator from each 360egg entry it is expected 100 pullets will be hatched or sufficient to make up the 100 birds required for the test pens the test starting april 1 1955 will end in august 1956 or when the birds are 500 days old the new testing station is the result of months of plan ning by committees apointed at the national poultry breeding conference held at ottawa in june 1953 this conference was attended by representatives of all provincial poultry depart ments universities poultry breeders and officials of the canada department of agri cultures poultry production and marketing services and the poultry division of the cen tral experimental farm in opening the conference the chairman mr s c barry now director of production ser vice ottawa described the overall purpose of the projeot when he said efficiency in poultry produc tion operations requires cer tain specific qualities in the stock in farm or commercial flocks the egg producer wants early maturity- a high degree of desirable market eggs from the minimum of feed the meat producer wants a good meat type liveability and a high rate of feed conversion into body growth they both have at least an indirect interest in such qualities as fertility and hatchability which to a consid erable extent determine the cost of chick production the qualities of perform ance which the poultry breeder wants in his birds are depend ent in varying degrees on en vironment and on heredity but even in those factors where the influence of hered ity may be relatively low the degree of their presence gen etically can represent the dif ference between profit and loss in the poultry operation the latest addition to the rop policy is designed to provide breeders with a means of assessing under common management conditions their progress in fixing desirable production characteristics in their strains and to improve their breeding operations in the general interests of the canadian poultry industry patterns cv vauotxtlaf j ontario count farm forum the forums of ont county have met to discuss the subject farm forums in the commun ity nine forums reported on this topic and all agreed that in their community forums had helped to foster neighbourli ness helped to develop local leadership as in a small group people speak up and learn to voice opinions that would be lost in a larger gathering regarding the matter of the farmers adjusting himself to the new trends in consumer buying the majority were of the opinion that only the best produce should be sold and efforts should be made to see that only the best is grown farm insurance was also dis cussed five out of nine for ums put fire insurance as most important two forums thought fire and auto in surance agood investment another subject was a na tional health plan to the question of medical hospital and health services in our community six forums were divided in opinion the coop medical plan available in on tario county was considered a very good one blue cross was mentioned some thought we could have more health inspec tion at the schools some have a nurse service but not all the well baby clinic at ux- bridge and tb clinic were good ideas to the question of where young farmers in this area should look for credit there was a variety of answers par ents jr farmers loan farm loan board vla and pri vate loans as to the question of avoiding undue expense it was thought that the farmer should try to rent land if buy ing try to get a mediumpriced farm and not go in too deep buy good used machinery and make sure to have stock of good quality several forums have helped to arganize for warble fly control and helped sponsor jr calf clubs in one township the forums have helped to or ganize a township unit of the federation of agriculture and have also helped on a hospital auxiliary the farmers share was another subject and nine for ums reported that the buying habits have changed over the last ten years by the buying of more canned foods frozen foods and readymixes the practice of creditbuying and barter has disappeared in near ly all areas buying is now mostly cash and carry n sirs u est la alttr 6 s 10 is 14 sit s dress za jds ssld petticoat lis yds 35 or sftln no iis foarplees knitted bbr cedar grove january 13 sid beare has earned the place of honour this week he has reached the position of master of the lodge in the markham union masons this is as high as he can go in the masons any further positions would have to be taken in the shriners the skating season opened in cedarena last saturday eve ning with a record crowd and a perfect night this family ac tivity has become so much a part of cedar grove winter now that we dont rely on the calendar until the music comes up through the valley there as a little trouble with the music while we are on the subject at saturdays session it was caused by one of the gremlins left behind by hazel all is well now though and the skaters waltz will come through unhindered this year because the popu larity of skating is mounting there will be more nights avail able for public skating tues day wednesday thursday and saturday will all be open to the enthusiasts lunch and cof fee which has been a feature in cedarena for the past 25- years will continue to be sup plied at the saturday night sessions it looked for a while last week as though skates were to be what the welldressed ce dar grove resident would be wearing for the duration of the winter oil my that was a slippery session if it could be done the best thing to do was just stay at home and watch the suns reflections on the icicled valley one thing makes up for another two important events took place this weak that have no bearing and yet a great bear ing on us they did not hap pen in our village and yet they both have strong significance to us because we happen to be alive right now one was the debut of a famous negro con tralto at the metropolitan op era marian anderson is the first negro to sing from that famous and coveted stage the other event was the opening
