enced the most disastrous flood in its history due to a cloudburst as a result nearly every bridge in the township was swept away this necessitated an extensive bridge building campaign with the late john miller as reeve and an able council the services of geo gerow and his brother john m both ex pert bridge builders were of great value to the township at this criti cal time afterwards he sold out the june meeting of whitchurch twp council that he would move a bylaw at the july meeting for the appoint ment of a permanent clerk to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late wm clark the council on sat urday deferred the appointment un til the end of october this was done by a motion submitted by councillors wesley williams and ross ratcliff reeve morgan baker introduced the matter by asking the councillors what action they intended to take the reeve stated that if a new ap pointment was made now of a sitt ing member of the council he would have to resign and this demanded under the statutes a nomination meeting to fill the vacancy on the council with a possible election con test after november 1st if a mem- ber of the council resigned an elec tion would not have to be held i believe said reeve baker that the general feeling is to leave the matter over until november deputyreeve kidd was not so sure that was the feeling some he thought were ready to see the ap pointment made now councillor crawford said im in the field for the position but i do not feel like pressing the matter following this statement the councillors submitted the motion which passed without opposition the acting clerk is mr hugh clark who has been engaged to carry on the work of this office until his suc cessor is appointed his remunera tion is 25 per week mr clark who is a son of the late clerk is also willing to accept the permanent ap pointment outside of him and councillor crawford there is no other aspirants that we have heard of mr clark will accordingly fill the position
