wondering if the im portance of the weekly prayer meet ings is made more so by reason of a statement we once heard a preacher make he said i once preached to a congregation of 350 people all of whom were women excepting 4 men on another occasion i rjih- ed to 425 of a congregarion but all were men excepting six women the latter congregation was in the peni tentiary although temporarily laid aside through illhealth one of stouffvilles very oldest citizens mr john urqu- hart attained his 85th birthday on saturday last mr urquhart has been ill for the past six months but was able to sit up on and saturday evenings and close wednesday afternoon mr lou morden has been getting the farmers goat to use a sporting expression during the past few- weeks he has scoured the country buying up all the nannies obtainable in order to fill an order or shipment to be made to a rural community in northern ontario where the goats will thrive on the hills and rocks and furnish milk to the settlers the goat industry in this part of ontario is so small as to be almost despised and there is really no market for them mr morden says they are valued something like a dog a farmer who ownes one may value it at 1 or more according to the at tachment it has made to the family he has furnished several billys as mascots for toronto organizations but when they take on this dignified position their value jumps with leaps and bounds as billy becomes part of the organization or club the goats shipped to northern ontario were placed in small crates and sent by express about 50 have been shipped in this manner this spring this week mr nathan forsyth re ceived the sad intelligence from los angeles of the death of his niece mrs james robinson of lansing mich death was due to a motor accident mrs robinson and her husband will be remembered as guests of the forsyths here last fall and were accompanied home to michigan by mr and mrs forsyth a few months ago the unfortunate lady went to los angeles to visit when she met with so sad a death she was in the prime of lite one of our business men is advo eating an extension to the south end of the town clerks office where a public rest room for ladies could be constructed and heated from the new furnace to be installed before next winter this business man is of the opinion that the work could be paid for from the water revenue which is well able to bear the cost of installing plumbing the above suggestion is handed to the ratepay ers by one of the very oldest active firms on main street now dont get so curious wondering who the busi ness man is that you forget all about his proposal r mrs w b sanders received the sad news last week announcing the death of her mother mrs matthew flint at hollywood california death took place on saturday may 19th following only a comparatively short illness mrs flint was in her 80th year and with her husband had lived in california for 20 years go ing direct to the southern country from stouffvllle their domicile was changed owing to the ill health ot her husband the deceased was born in this town a daughter of the late richard barnes and spent 60 years of her life here her husband was a well known builder and contractor who constructed many ot the build ings now in use here she was a devoted wife and mother and a faithful christian and member ot the methodist body besides her hus band she is survived by two children edw flint of toronto and mrs w b sanders of stouffvllle also one sister mrs eliza flint who resides with her son chancellor chas w flint of syracuse university the remains are expected to reach stouff ville late friday night for interment in stouffvllle cemetery on saturday may 26th funeral from mr w b sanders at 2 oclock pm the ber eaved husband will accompany the remains to stouffvllle while engaged in painting the ititchen at mr alt hoovers a few- days ago frank mowder the brush artist engaged to do the finery met with a mishap which is the first of its kind in his experience and one he will devoutly implore the shaper of our destinies never to let occur again by standing on the top of mrs hoo vers stepladder the decorator was barely able to reach the ceiling and it was when he was in this exalted position standing on his toes brush in one hand and full pot of paint in the other that something went wrong with the ladder it was a new patent arrangement and not being made secure flattened out with such suddenness as to leave the pain ter standing in the air for just a moment in his sudden and hur ried descent to the floor frank must liave feared his hat wouldnt follow him promptly and the hand holding the full can of paint suddenly shot up so that on reaching the floor on the first and second rebound the en tire liquid was poured on his head as the color was green we leave our readers within full view of the spec tacle with but one request dont mention that you saw it in the tri bune if the canadian national railways station was ever destined to be as large as the grand central in new york which covers eighty acres of land and deals with a daily traffic of 600 trains it chances wore shat tered on monday when a gang of 25 men from bala subdivision of the cnr started work here in tearing up the old sutton branch line a special lifting appartus hoisted the rails right onto flat cars and men soon pulled out the ties which are also being removed during the aternoon word arrived from toron to to cease work until further orders it is understood that the road con tractor on the eighth concession ot whitchurch is endeavouring to have 300 car loads of stone delivered at ballantrae before the road is scrap ped and when in town on monday and seeing operations started he got in touch with the railway officials and succeeded in stopping the work some time ago the road boss said he tad assurance that the line would not be interferrcd with until his 300 cars were taken over it but the or der had been reversed some
