years as councillor mr h w sllversides retired this year f w has done very good work and spent many hours of faithful service in the interest of the rate- liayers the public school christmas con- erts were a delight to all the pupils each room was decorated fitting to the occasion and in the primaries the parents were invited by the teacher in charge to attend school will resume on monday jan 4th we had an unusual touch of win ter over sunday when the thermo meter dropped to 24 below zero during saturday night at ten oclock sunday morning it still hovered around 10 below but it moderated some on monday it wa3 hard on the coal bin but then think of the money you save on fly swats during the winter in accordance with hi3 old custom our townsman w h todd presented each of his tenants with a sue christmas goose the xew yeare market on tues day was rather tame after the big christmas market geese were 22 to 23c chickens 25c ducks 22c eggs 50 to 55c and butter 40 to 45e practically no turkeys were offered a baker in england made a christ mas cake which weighed a ton but a west end resident told us on satur day that he had eaten a piece on christmas day which he was sure wejghed a ton also wv j mather undertaker has been notified that the remains of the late thos kay a former resident here who died in western canada on sunday would arrive in stouffville about the middle of the week for in terment at the locat cemetery the extremely cold weather was responsible for the local line of the canadian national railway carrying a tremendous number of passengers over the holiday many who other wise might have motored preferred the comfort of the trains and as a result about 1000 people pulled out of toronto on the three trains com ing this way on thursday for points along the line of course the roads were good for motoring and many took advantage of them despite the cold george m lee truck driver is a better guesser than kaiser bill whose one big guess was that his armies could lick the world back in 1914 the truck mans guess was on the weight of a young heifer hanging in the window of leadbetters but- cher shop the nearest guess to the correct weigh was to receive a goose for christmas and georges figures and the beef were exactly the same being 363 pounds am brose stover came a close second being onlyout 2 ounces elias leh man was third guessing 365 in all several hundred people- displayed their skill on estimating the weight and it is surprising how many came i me5r the mark about 20 guesses were within ten pounds of the cor- xect weight an interesting annual gatherins took place on christmas day at the home of mr a g lehman obrien avenue when the descendants of the late clhoover father of mrsleh- rnan assembled to the number of 51 and partook of the christmas festivities the day was spent in social discourse and singing of fami liar songs the late c l hoover who died in 1918 was a resident of markham township and his descen dants now number over 65 those coming the longest distance to at tend this gathering were mr and mrs earl millerof fenelon falls mr mqler being principal of the continuation school there the other members of the party railway service on the line from stouffville to sutton after the first of the year the daily passenger train now in operation will run only three days- a week leaving stouffville every tuesday thursday and satur day at 945 am for sutton return- ine so as to connect with the four oclock train from here to toronto the sutton train will not carry pas sengers to toronto it will be noted but conneots with the passenger ser vice on this line another important change will be the discontinuance of the peterboro flyer which is the earliest passen ger train to toronto each morning and the late train to come back on in the evening with the cancella tion of this train early in the new year it will be impossible to reach the city before noon travelling by rail but the train is probably looked upon as robbing the regular mail train of passengers high school girl requires apply tribune offiee room j purisibn cottrt fa markfiam men- j j dar- jan isur the next court ta i miss m yansfckle has fortunately they were uninjured and did no particular damage the team is a lively pair and had not been getting sufficient exercise since fall work ceased ing the good time while the clan doesnt lay usual good things from the tree among the gifts was a handsome cheque for mr joel nendick from theboard and congregation in recognition of his services as church janitor for 34 years mrs truman was also pre sent and was presented with a life membership in the missionary so ciety the kiddies under the direc tion of their teachers seemed to have unlimited talent and provided al most the entire program with the exception of a duet by messes aj ward and reg button which was well received and revealed musical talent we did not know was in town the receipts at the door amounted to nearly 50 i want to express my appreciation at receiving an election for a second term to thereeveship we are most happy to present to our citizens a state ment that shows our finances in excellent shape and a good surplus v also our public utilities hydro and waterworks are in excellent both physical and financial condition and giving perfect public service we too have found it possible to reduce your tax rate 3 mills notwithstanding the addition of considerable v equipment i want to assure you that during 1926 the wellbeing of our town will have my most earnest and careful atten tion with best wishes for a most happy and prosperous new year respectfully f w silvester one of the very old residents of stouffville district passed away last thursday in the person of chris topher john zeller a resident of the east end of the town the funeral on monday took place to stouffville cemetery the service being conduct ed by rov a g warder of the mennonite church the late mr zeller was born on the third children all of whom survive together with the mother whose maiden name was sarah cambpell being born in vwhlt- church most of the children were home for the funeral they are mrs sutherland of winnipeg oliver of stouffville miss nina of lindsay mrs ponton of concord harold of toronto mrs lehman of long branch mrs lonegan of toronto kenneth p zeller and miss dorothy of toronto the late mr zeller was an honest industrious working man until he was overcome with illness a i few years ago i the financial statement presented to the ratepayers of stonffville at the public meeting in the auditorium on monday evening showed thatstouff- ville is sound financiallywith only a moderate tax rate and this reflects credit on the outgoing council of 1925 there is a substantial hank balance shown in every department which makes a cash balance in the bank of s3400 with which to start the hew year last year the council started out with a cash balance in the bank of 52700 and this was considered big and this year it has bounded still higher but its not a bad thing to have ever since our electric lighting systen has been taken over by the hydro or as a hydro enterprise there has been no mianf lal state ment given the ratepayers and this seem to us the one weak spot in this years statement even though the government or the hydro electric system of ontario audit the 1925 accounts sometime in 1926 the peo ple who own the local utility are entitled to a statement showing what is being done and how the system stands financially this is done in the case of the other public utility namely the water system the total receipts and expendi tures of the town for the year ex clusive of the school board who will give a statement to the people in february and the
