The Shoddy Factory Burned Down

There was a great stir on Thursday night last (Aug. 30) about eleven o’clock when the fire alarm sounded loudly, and people sped from their homes at a hot pace, but in discovering the fire was in the shoddy factory the most of them walked the rest of the way. The fire had started in the east end of the building among some old oil barrels and was bound to burn, whether or not, and the play of the two nozzles from the fire engine had no other effect then to delay the biggest blaze until the town people could all arrive. Then it burned like a straw stack and was the centre of observation from many a dry eye. Ex-Mayor and present Councillor Long appeared to be the only person who felt his cords of compassion touched. He walked up and down four times in the centre of the road while the remainder of the crowd watching the firemen-stood still.
