Students' poems published A picture appeared in last week's issue of the News of three St. Martin School students whose poems have been published. The students are Jesse McGrath, Natasha Moskwa and Amy Helmink and their poems were sent last spring by their teacher at that time, Mrs. Nesbitt, to Lakehead University. The poems were chosen from over 1,100 others and now appear in, ""Catching The Spirit- An anthology of verse by the students of Nor- thwestern Ontario". Poems by three public school students were also published in the book. They are Jennifer Gould, Lee- Anne Fenton and Alana Harper. The book is for use by teachers in the entire Northwestern region, said Mrs. Nesbitt, from Blind River all the way to the Manitoba border. It can be used from kindergarten to Grade 13, she added. Just after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11, Principal Speziale presented each of the three St. Martin students with their own let- ter from Mary Clare Courtland, the editor of the book. She thanked the students for sub- mitting their poems and said that they (the poems) showed "a special quali- ty that will delight readers everywhere". In the letter, Courtland also en- courages the students "to continue writing to foster a special talent". The book is sponsored by the Nor- thwestern Affiliate of the Ontario Council of Teachers of English. Mountains by Jesse McGrath: Big high snowy rocks Reaching so high to the sky Mountains are towers. Grass by Amy Helmink: Grass is very small Blowing in the cold, strong wind Lost between flowers Butterflies by Natasha Moskwa: Quickly fluttering, Passed a garden daffodil Never once stopping, Except to land on a rose, To touch its soft red petals. Toy Shop by Jennifer Gould: The toy shop is my favourite place, Filled with toys in every space, Game boards and stuffed toys, Fill the shelves, For girls and boys. The toy shop is my favourite place, Filled with toys that I can race. Dinky cars and trucks too, Fill the shelves, For me and you. The toy shop is my favourite place, Filled with dolls, with a pretty face. Some can sing and some can dance, They fill the shelves At which we glance. The toy shop is my favourite place People come at a rapid pace, To buy the many, lovely toys, That fill the shelves For girls and boys. The Robin by Lee-Anne Fenton: A robin comes home in the Spring, And has a little song to sing, And he chirps and chirps so merrily But gains a dirty look from a bee. As summer comes, he enjoys the sun, Parties with his friends and has lots of fun, But when fall comes here, He has lost all his cheer, As he packs his bags, His lower lip sags, And he leaves for the south each year. Mushrooms by Alana Harper: I hate mushrooms and I'm not teasin', And for more than one special reason. Far down your dark throat they glide, And there they slither and slide. And if I eat a mushroom by mistake, I will spit it out "cause I can't even fake. When I see my mother bring out that can, I dread the thought of them sizzling in the pan. So, whenever you see that [m around, Remember! Please keep the mushrooms in the' ground!
