@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturdey, September 11, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR Everything From Soup To Nuts' EXAGGERATION, for the purpose of impressing, is @ r gimmick these days in the TV advertising whirl t the washer that's 10 feet tall and the week that's so big, it takes eight days, to mention a couple of the more recent promotional blurbs, has nothing, simply nothing, on the crowded and far-reaching scope of sports activity that will be generated around these parts in the next week or 10 days, Frankly, that big exhibition game at Civie Auditorium tonight, when Oshawa 'Green Gaels" play the OLA "All-Stars", is only a slow-motion start, in our opinion, It should be a little better than the farce that was per- petrated on the gullible enthusiasts of the area, Wednesday might at Whitby, On that occasion, the top "Champions team of the OLA circuit,. bolstered by the nine or ten best "pick-ups" from the rest of the league, played a selection of what was left, called the Senior 'All-Stars', Take the full Brooklin team, pick the 10 best from the rest of the league and just how could you expect to field sufficient com: petition to make it a game -- let alone call the scanty remainder the 'All-Stars'? Green Gaels will not be holster« ed by pick-ups for this game tonight, Under the very flex ible rules and: "whimsies" of the CLA, this year, as two- time champions, the Gaeis are not permitted any "pick- ups', so the opposition may be a little more balanced, But outside of Mimico -- how many of the "All-Stars" will be in shape, two or three weeks after their long, arduous sea: son was completed? i WE NEVER did agree with the "pick-ups" or "replace: ment' system, except when it was first introduced during the war years, as a necessary evening-up process, Now, 20 years later, we think it's a joke, since in reality, it means the Canadian championship finals is not a test between the best in the Bast against the best in the West (within team registration limit) but rather one or the other section is actually-an All-Star aggregation, We think the players that won a league and divisional championship for their club should be the only players eligible to represent that club in Canadian Championship final play, If it's to be an All-Star event -- why wait until the end of the season, to stage it? 80 MUCH for that phase of the activities, Certainly the blame is not upon the clubs but rather upon the parent bodies of lacrosse, who seem to insist on keeping their game behind the times, We think Green Gaels would have won in 1963, even without their 'pick-ups' and also last year, This year, we think they'll prove our point by winning without any pick-ups -- even though this time, the West is allowed to have some replacements, Monday night sees the atart of both the Junior and Senior Canadian Lacrosse Championships and we here, in Ontario County are more interested than anybody -- except the fans in New Weat- minster. They've even got us beaten -- they've got their own hometown teams in both championship series, We're almost as good -- we've got Oshawa in the Junior series and our nearest Senior club (with several Oshawa players as members) in the Mann Cup series, The Junior "Salmon: bellies' are due here tomorrow or Monday afternoon and the series opens on Monday night, Brooklin leaves tomorrow night and opens the Mann Cup finals Monday night, Here at home, subscriber season ticket holders are reminded they must pick up their lacrosse tickets before 6:00 p.m, the day of the game, HOCKEY FANS get a reminder today also -- in the midst of all this hectic lacrosse playoff activity, Oshawa Generals' new season tickets go on 'sale Monday and the gale will stay on for two weeks, until Sept. 27, Coach "Rep" Guidolin and his wife and family, took up residence here last week and 'the kids'? are now attending school in Osh- awa. Others that rolled back into town this past week and started to school include goalie Ian Young, defencemen Bobby Orr, Nick Beverley, Chris Roberts and Jim Whittaker, along with forwards Chris Hayes and Jim Booth, Bill Little was here all summer, "Danny" O'Shea, of course, is an Ajax resident. Kingston's Wayne Cashman will be here with- in 10 days, well before the: training camp opens on Thurs- day, Sept. 23. Incidentally, the camp is booked to be at the Civic Auditorium but GM Wren Blair has also rented Bowmanville Arena, just in case The Minto Cup playoffs are still going on and prevent them putting ice in the Civie Auditorium by that date, This could be one of those situa- tions and as Wren Blair puts it -- 'It's apt to be awkward, but let's win one Canadian championship at-a-time and make everybody happy'. IN 'THE MIDST of all this Canadian Championship la- crosse activity and the advent of the hockey season, let's not lose sight of the summer sports activities, which are now reaching their apex.
