6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, August 31, 1965 | SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR Everything From Soup To Nuts THE MINTO CUP finals should climax one of the finest Jacrosse seasons of recent years and right now, the gutted- stick enthusiasts of Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, etc., are looking forward to the event. Whitby's good Junior "B team was eliminated on Saturday night, by, the Huntsville Teen Towners, who have been "'the power in the OLA 'junior "B" loop all season long. The Lasco Steelers gave it 'a real good try and it's certainly no disgrace to be elim- 4nated by a better team -- which Huntsville was! In the 'Senior "A" ranks, we have Brooklin battling it out, tooth- and-nail with the Brampton Excelsiors, for the right to move 4nto The Mann Cup playoffs. Brampton won last night at home to epen the series at two wins apiece and the fifth 'game of this 4-out-of-7 set will be played in the Brooklin 'Arena, tomorrow night. Having claimed the rights to the 7th game, should it go the limit, by virtue of having fin- ished in first place, Brooklin is slightly favored to emerge as the OLA senior champions. However, other than a pos- 'sible home game, should the Eastern Canada representatives challenge for Mann Cup playoff rights, it seems likely that as soon as the currént Brampton-Brooklin series is over-- 'the Senior lacrosse activity will move to British Columbia, with The Mann Cup finals scheduled to be played this year in "The West'. pionship finals for That leaves The t "The East" and after watching Green Minto Cup Junior cham- Gaels dispose of Mimico Mounties here last night, with the utmost ease -- it would appear that it's only a matter of 'a couple of weeks, before we'll see the Canadian Junior "lacrosse championship finals, 'Civic Auditorium, SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS moved weekend and also last night. Second game of this 3-out-of-5 series, will go tomorrow night, at eight o'clock, under the floodlights at North Oshawa Park. Meanwhile, the City and District Asso- ciation's Juvenile League championship playoffs get under- way tonight, At 6:15 o'clock, at Alexandra Park, it's People's 'Clothing vs Genosha Aces, first game of a 2-out-of-3 semi- final series and the second game will be on Thursday night, same time, same place. In the other bracket, Port Perry Juveniles face the Jay Cees and their first. game is to- morrow night, also at 6:15 o'clock. Tomorrow night, of course, sees "the big game" between Richmond Hill Shells vand Oshawa Tony's, at Alexandra Park. Tony's staged a 9th-inning rally last night, to defeat Mel-O-Ripes, in New Toronto, and move into first place in the Beaches League standing. If they can lick Pettenuzzo and his Richmond Hill mates here tomorrow night, then Tony's could end up on top of the Beach League ladder -- but actually, a win tomorrow night will only give Tony's a three-point lead and Richmond Hill has two more games to play, besides the one here tomorrow night. OASA playoff action finds Oshawa Merchants playing Kingston in their first game of Eastern Ontario zone finals, at Alexandra Park, tonight at 8:15 o'clock and they go back to Kingston on Thursday ... The series now stands at two wins each with the fifth game slated for Brook- lin Wednesday night. To date. both teams have won their home games, Brampton got off to a good start in the first period in last night's game as they built up a 5-2 lead. Both teams scored three times in the second period to make it 8-5 for the home town crew. Glen Lotton was dressed for the game but was under the weather and played only the final minute of the game, and at that had two good shots on goal. The contest was played at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Powless, who was expected to see only limited action because of a case of the flu, notched five goals and assisted on three others, while. sparkling de- fensively. The second - year centreman was a standout in a penalty-killing role, particularly in the final period. DAVIS SCORES SIX Davis,, who suffered a slight shoulder separation in the open- ing frame, led Gaels in the scor- ing columns, with six goals and a pair of assists. Club physician, Dr. W. F. Rundle, reports that the injury is not expected to keep Davis out of action. Phil Clayton, Don Stinson and Brian Thompson tallied two goals apiece for the winners, with Clayton turning in his finest performance of the playoffs. Other goals were scored by Ken Thompson, Jim Higgs, Larry Lloyd and Ross Jones. Ken Thompson also added six assists to his total, while Higgs collect- ed five. Dwight Davies turned in his usual strong checking game, keeping the opposition well clear of the Gael goal. Phil Fadel was the only re- peat scorer for the . visitors, notching three goals, with Kevin Ellis, Bruce Ferguson, Bill Man- ley and Russ Ferguson counting the others. Trailing 3-1, entering the top half of the ninth and also battl- ing the curfew, the Motor City nine rallied with six unanswered runs, to nail the first-place win.
