Religion, Rest, Taik Oifered In Burlington Shopping Centre BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP)--| The small, glass-fronted store in the heart of a Burlington shopping centre never adver- tises. The clerks never consciously "sell" anything. The only merchandise is re- ligion, rest and a chance to talk. It's free to anyone who wants it, 6 The Church Centre is an ex- loratory project, one of a very ie in the U.S. "Maybe this won't work," said Rey, John Stone, an Episcopal (Anglican) minister. "But it's a stab--if it doesn't work, we'll try another' stab." Stone, a slight young man with a quick smile, sat in a drug. store near his shopping centre church and described the religious experiment. He told of an elderly lady who came to the shopping centre chapel every day for a month. was living with her mother-in- law, her only surviving relative, "All she ever did was come in and talk," the minister said. "T used what little knowledge I have and after a little while she had learned to live with her mother-in-law. All she needed was somebody to talk it out with. It's important. "A man may come in and sit down for a few minutes, but the stories that come out, This sort 'of thing is very intangible, but it's the kind of thing we're set up for." should constantly be ready with a sympathetic ear, a place "where people can leave some oftheir burdens." He said some action will have to be taken because of reduced breeding population, especially mallards, and an announcement could be expected shortly. Overkills in the U.S. and Can- ada and drought in recent years were blamed for the population decline. U.S. surveys showed an over- kill last year, and while present Canadian survey methods are inot as accurate, returns from banding programs indicate an overkill here also. The Canadian official, F. H. The Greek government is being urged to take steps that will ensure it stands for another 2,500 years, A group of Athens architects and engineers who recently car- ried out.a private study of the effects of modern day civiliza- tion on the ancient monuments of the Greek capital, confirmed: "They are in grave danger." The group contends the all- white marble Parthenon, a tri- umph of Doric architecture in the age of Pericles; is being affected by "air pollution, air- liners and high heels," and de- clares immediate steps: should be taken to protect it. Growing industrialization in the Greek capital is leading to a degree of air pollution which is causing corrosion of the honey-colored Pendelic marble from which the ancient Greeks constructed their great temple > A to the glory of the symbol of democracy and crown), ay pe Modem Maladies Strike Centuries-Old Parthenon aging Parthenon is suffering, the study found. Basic cause of the 'symptoms of clinical death" which the Parthenon is showing, says Prof. Ernst Laglotz of Bonn University, is the '"'sea breeze." He says corrosion has eaten ideeply into the inner structure of the marble columns that face the sea. He proposes several measures, short- and long-term to pre- serve the 46 outer columns, A short-term measure would be to treat the marble columns with a special chemical solution. The long-term approach, seriously being considered, is to enclose the temple in a glass case. The monuments have with- stood sieges in ancient times and barricades were erected on the Acropolis during the Greek war of independence in 1821, thenon ever received was in 1687, when Venetian shells fired from ships in the nearby Sar- onic Gulf ignited a Turkish pow- der magazine stored beneath its wooden roof. The structure sur- rived, though in a somewhat battered state. Athena, Most planes landing at or leaving Athens airport, more than eight miles away, try to avoid flying over the Acropolis. But visitors to the famous rock still claim they can feel a slight vibration from passing jets. HEELS CHIP FLOOR The archietcts and engineers also found that high heels are chipping away the temple floor- ing. Adoption of one of two measures was recommended: Either follow the example of the Louvre in Paris, which ad- mits only persons in low heels or sandals, or close the Parthe- non (but not the Acropolis) to visitors. The three modern ailments, however, are only in addition to the main illness from which the 'Lawn Mower 'All Fired-Up A lawn mower blaze sent Oshawa Fire Department rush- ing to Rossland rd. w. last evening but by the time they arrived the owner of the ma- chine had doused the blaze.
